87th Giro d'Italia - Grand TourItaly, May 8-30, 2004Main Page Results Stage profile Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 18 - May 28: Cles Val Di Non - Bormio 2000, 118 kmCunego clearly consolidates Giro lead in BormioBy Tim Maloney, European Editor With yet another brilliant ride capped by his fourth Giro d'Italia stage win this year, 22 year old Maglia Rosa Damiano Cunego (Saeco) sprinted to victory at Bormio 2000, and with two stages to go looks almost certain to win his first Grand Tour on Sunday in Milano. Cunego has shown from the beginning of the Giro that he has not only the legs but the smarts to win a Grand Tour, and with a powerful Saeco team backing him up, the only thing that can beat him is bad luck or sickness. "Today we raced the right way," said Cunego. "We tried first with Simoni, and if he didn't succeed in staying away solo, we would try a sprint. I set the tempo, waiting for Simoni to fire, but he didn't move and I felt so good that I went. However, Gilberto is now third and tomorrow he can gain another position, seeing as the climbs are suited to him. The central objective is the podium. I don't believe that he was [angry], even if perhaps the Giro is not going as he expected." Cunego continues to surprise himself, but has taken the race by the horns and is now in a very commanding position. "If they told me a month ago that I would have won the Giro, I would have laughed at them. I seemed to be a goal that was too big, but evidently I have matured quickly and I knew how to take advantage of my chances." Still second on GC 1'31 behind Cunego, powerhouse Serguei Gonchar (De Nardi) had another excellent day at the Giro d'Italia, finishing third on the stage and defending his GC place well. The laconic Ukrainian explained that "Once in a while, I have good legs...at the Giro, I've never had such good legs on the climbs. I hung in there and stayed with the best riders. But Cunego is just too strong for me to do anything. My only hope is to keep second place...if there was only a time trial in Milano like last year." After his audacious break on the Gavia was reeled in Bormio, Stefano Garzelli was philosophical about his performance today. "It's too bad that the guys in the break with me were afraid to do anything...when we were away on the descent on the Gavia, there was a lot of headwind but I had to do all the work. Maybe I'm out of it for this year's Giro, but I can still try!" Garzelli is 8th on GC, losing one position and over 2'30 on Maglia Rosa Cunego. Yet again, Brad McGee (FDJeux.com) proved that he's having a superb Giro d'Italia. 11th today at the finish in Bormio 2000, McGee is now 7th on GC at 5'24, losing two GC positions to experienced Grand Tour riders Belli and Cioni. Unless he cracks big time tomorrow, the Sydneysider will finish well up on GC in the Giro, a big step forward for the FDJeux.com man. "It was really great to be ahead with the front riders on the Gavia, but at the base of the final climb when the attacks went I just couldn't stay with the real climbers. Bravo to Saeco since they rode smart today. I'm pretty happy and we'll see tomorrow how things go...if the legs go, they the go. We'll see!" Colnago-Landbouwkrediet's diesse Marco Saligari discussed Popovych's slide to fourth on GC today, losing almost 0'41 to Cunego and is now 0'16 behind Simoni. "Sure, Popovych has improved in his time trialing and isn't as strong in the mountains as last year, but look at the progress that Gonchar and Cunego have made too. Not having a strong team has hurt Popovych, but the legs of Cunego have made the difference in this Giro." Major kudos to steady Dario Cioni (Fassa Bortolo), who had great legs today to finish second on the stage and move up three positions on GC to fifth, 4'44 behind Cunego. How it unfoldedAt Cles Val di Non, famous home of Europe's tastiest apples, the Giro peloton headed west for Passo Tonale under a cold rain this afternoon at 1:45pm. Non-starters today were both Lampre sprinters Pagliarini and Svorada, who crashed together after 50 km yesterday and had to abandon from injuries. Giuliano Figueras (Panaria), who contracted a stomach flu on rest day and was sick all day during the stage Thursday and losing 13'00 on GC, also didn't start in Cles Val di Non on Friday. Gloves, long sleeves, knee warmers and shoe covers were the order of the day with a cool (10 degrees) rainy start in Cles. After 16 km, 20 riders got away, including break boy, Righi and Vila (Lampre), Maglia Verde Wegmann and Strauss (Gerolsteiner), Mason (Vini Caldirola), Nauduzs, (Domina Vacanze), Sijmens and Bileka (Colnago-Landbouwkrediet), Gomis Lopez and Bertogliati (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Moreni and Miholjevic (Alessio), Mazzanti (Panaria), Gilbert (FDJeux.com), Schnider (Phonak), Pospyeyev (Acqua e Sapone), Pugaci (De Nardi) and Maglia Ciclamino, super sprinter Ale Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) and two Saeco watchdogs, Bertagnolli and Stangelj, who were just sitting on the break. Petacchi dropped off the break with 5 km to go on the ascent of the Tonale and after 1hr15, the group was 2'30 ahead of the gruppo Maglia Rosa, where Saeco's Szmyd and Fornaciari were riding tempo. Popovych's teammates Durand, Verstrepen and Avdyeyev had already lost contact and Durand climbed off and abandoned. At the Tonale KOM, it was Wegmann ahead of Strauss and Gomis Lopez, then there was the 10 km descent to Ponte di Legno and the base of the feared 16.7 km ascent of the Passo di Gavia to Cima Coppi at 2,618m above sea level. Petacchi was at 2'14, while the Gruppo Maglia Rosa was at 2'41. At the base of the Tonale descent, as some weak sun broke through the high clouds, Lampre began forcing in the break and dropped some riders who had been gapped. As the Gavia began under sunny skies, Vila and Miholjevic got a gap, with the two Gerolsteiner riders leading the chase 0'15 behind. The first 8 km of the Gavia's 16.7 km are not that tough, but at the halfway point, the ascent gets serious - very serious. A steep hairpin starts the steep, narrow section that ascends past 2000m and into the snow-covered slopes. The front riders were riding steady, with seven riders left from the break, 0'25 behind (Wegmann, Bertagnolli, Gomis, Mason, Mazzanti, Bileka and Righi) while the gruppo Maglia Rosa with 40 riders still was led by Saeco at 4'00. As the two break riders Vila and Miholjevic hit the narrow former mule track where the Gavia gets serious, they were working hard in their 39x25, and Mazzanti was leading the chasers. With 11 km to go to the Gavia KOM, Popovych flatted in the gruppo Maglia Rosa and luckily for the Ukrainian, his teammate Duma was there and could make a quick wheel change so Popo got right back in. With 9 km to go, Garzelli suddenly busted out on the left with Belli following, and Saeco not only didn't chase, but they didn't even raise the chase pace behind. As he did yesterday, Garzelli showed his class and guts when he attacked and got 0'20, and Saeco finally raised the pace on the front. With the dramatic snow capped crest of Passo Gavia in the background, Garzelli flew up the narrow track in his attempt to get back to where he once belonged in the Giro d'Italia. Up the road, his faithful teammate and training partner Oscar Mason waited for him with 7 km to go on the Gavia. With 5 km to go to the summit, Miholjevic was still alone in the lead, 0'44 ahead of Vila and Gomis, with Moreni at 1'00 and the rest of the former break riders spread across the mountain road. Garzelli was 3'10 from the leader and had gained 0'50 on the gruppo Maglia Rosa. Mason wasn't much help and Garzelli quickly rode away from his teammate. The Gruppo Maglia Rosa was now composed of Szmyd, Bertagnolli, Mazzoleni, Cunego and Simoni (Saeco), Gonchar (De Nardi), Popovych (Colnago-Landbouwkredit), Noč' and Pellizotti (Alessio), Ardila (Chocolade Jacques), Di Grande and Laverde (Formaggio Pinzolo Fiave'), Brandt (Lotto), Cioni (Fassa Bortolo), Sella (Panaria), Tonkov (Vini Caldirola), Mazzanti (Panaria) and Brad McGee (FDJeux.com). Saeco had slowed the tempo in the gruppo Maglia Rosa for a while as Garzelli just continued to gain ground. After the tunnel at 2300m with 4 km to the Gavia summit, Garzelli blasted past Bertagnolli, Wegmann and Bileka and just kept going. Riding through banks of snow on the treeless mountain road, Garzelli was breathing clouds of steam like locomotive as he pounded his 39x25 at 70 revs per minute. With 2 km to go to Cima Coppi, Miholjevic was 1'23 ahead of Vila, Moreni and Gomis, 2'15 on the fast closing Garzelli and 3'28 on the gruppo Maglia Rosa. Back with Cunego's group, Popovych didn't look great and was just hanging on the back, as Pellizotti and McGee were yo-yo'ing off the back. Maglia Rosa Cunego was just tranquillo with his treno rosso of Saeco. At the Cima Coppi Gavia KOM with 46 km to race, the temperature was 5 degrees and Croatian hard man Miholjevic passed over first, with Garzelli and Gomis at 1'07, Miholjevic's teammate Moreni at 1'25, Vila at 1'30, Belli at 2'18 and the Saeco led gruppo Maglia Rosa 2'55. Garzelli and Gomis bombed the narrow, bumpy snow damaged road through the two meter high snowbanks down to S.Catarina Valfurva, home of Italian ski champion Debora Compagnoni where the roads widened. The sun had come out again as the riders descended to Bormio and Garzelli had now moved up to 3rd on GC. Moreni and Vila were chasing Garzelli and Gomis as the Spaniard's diesse Vittorio Algeri was trying to get up to him with 40 km to go. In the gruppo Maglia Rosa, most of the dropped riders like McGee, Sella, Pellizotti and others had come back together on the usual regroupment. The gap between Garzelli was and gruppo Maglia Rosa was 1'35 as the Saecos were getting the chase organized behind. Moreni and Vila had now bridged up to Garzelli and Gomis but with Moreni's teammate up the road, Vila defending his teammate Belli's GC place and a strong headwind blowing up the valley, this put Garzelli's great ride in danger with 25 km to go. In Bormio at 25 km to go, Miholjevic was at the base of the Gavia descent and Garzelli was doing all the work, learning the lessons of having a strong team the hard way. His quartet was now losing more time to the gruppo Maglia Rosa as Gomis had now stopped working as well. At the Intergiro in sunny, windy Bormio with 19 km to go, Miholjevic had gained time on the four chasers at 1'51, with Cunego's group at 2'26, now just 0'30 behind Garzelli & Co. A little surprise was waiting ahead for Miholjevic with the non-classified steep 4 km climb of La Motta to scale before the steep final ascent to Bormio 2000. Up front, the Croat had begun to croak and Alessio's game was about to backfire on them. With Moreni not working, a strong headwind and still two more climbs to go, with 18 km to go, Garzelli's group was caught, but it wasn't certain if either of their climbers Pellizotti or Noč' had the legs to do anything. Raindrops began to fall from the sunny sky on Miholjevic, who was still hanging on 2'00 ahead of the 30 strong Saeco-led gruppo Maglia Rosa. Popovych then changed his rear wheel and was brought back by his teammate Bileka With 10 km to go at the base of the 9.9 km ascent of Bormio 2000. Miholjevic hung tough out front after 80 km, but with a lead of 1'15 and Saeco cranking up the pace in the 26 strong gruppo Maglia Rosa, his moments of liberty could only be counted in minutes. When the first steep slopes to Bormio 2000 began, Miholjevic then cracked big time while Saeco kept the pace high with Big Eddy Mazzoleni on the front, and maglia Rosa Cunego right on his wheel. Both Garzelli and Pellizotti were dropped with 8 km to go, while Simoni made an acceleration off the front and gapped the gruppo Maglia Rosa. Gibo was followed by Sella, who bridged up to Simoni. Once Simoni got a 0'10 lead, Cunego made a strong move, followed by Cioni, Gonchar, Mazzoleni, Garate and Valjavec, while a suffering Popovych was dropped. First Simoni and Sella and then the gruppo Maglia Rosa caught a creeping Miholjevic at 6.5 km to go to Bormio 2000, and then Cunego asked Mazzoleni to go to the front to slow the tempo. Some riders came back to the gruppo Maglia Rosa like Perez Cuapio, Noč' and Popovych. With 5.5 km to go, the two fugitives had 0'18 on the gruppo Maglia Rosa and Simoni then attacked Sella on the hardest part of the climb. Gibo went solo into the lead, while Gonchar then hit the front of the gruppo Maglia Rosa to try and limit the damage to his GC position. Rangy Dario Cioni was having a good day today and he suddenly attacked behind Simoni with 4.5 km to go. Cunego followed him immediately as did Gonchar. They caught the fading Sella in 200m, as Popo went into yoyo mode again at the back of the chase group. As Cioni pounded hard behind, Simoni faded with 4 km to go and the three chasers were now quickly catching last year's Giro winner. With 3.5 km to go, Simoni was caught and there were now four up front. Gonchar went to the front again as behind, the magic Mexican climber Julio Perez Cuapio blasted his 53x21 gear across from the chase to the front quartet to make it five. Popovych was now chasing hard at the front of a group 20 behind. As the gradient eased in and the gap began to close the last 2.5 km, Maglia Rosa Cunego himself hit the front to try and set up a stage win for Simoni. But Gibo didn't have the legs and Cunego sprinted away with 200m to go for the win, while Cioni took second ahead of Gonchar and Simoni was fourth, with no time bonus, but last year's Giro winner edged past Popovych into third on GC. The day's other hero Stefano Garzelli paid for his Gavia flight on the final climb and finished 2'03 behind Cunego. Stage 19 - May 29: Bormio-Presolana, 122 kmSaturday's penultimate Giro d'Italia stage simply doesn't leave much to the imagination when it comes to climbing. After a 30 km descent from Bormio to Valltelina, the parcours turns right and it's the terrible ascent of the super-steep Mortirolo. After 4 km of climbing, the steepest section ramps up at 18%, and then the hard part begins! The middle 6.1 km section of Mortirolo has an average grade of 12.4%! Certainly Mortirolo will make an dramatic early selection on the stage, but then it's south down Val Camonica and west into the Alpi Orobie and the ascent of the seldom climbed Vivione. This climb is a monster, with almost 20 km of climbing at an average grade of 6.9%, with the final 4.7 km at 9.7% average grade. After a 20km descent off Vivione, the final climb of the 2004 Giro awaits; a steep 7.9km climb up to Passo Presolana, then back down to the finish in Presolana. After today's Gavia/Bormio double, Saturday's 40 km of climbing may be one of the toughest stages on the 2004 calendar! PhotographyImages by Olympia Photo
