Geelong's Eastern Beach was more like a battleground in the final lap of the
hot-dog circuit as there were a series of three crashes that brought down about
a dozen riders, allowing Brett Aitken to skip away and win the third day of
the Jacyo Geelong Bay Cycling Classic.
The South Australian, riding for Drapac Properties-Beasley Cycles beat Western
Australian Henk Vogels (Bicycle Superstore-Victorian Home State Home Loans)
with Stuart O'Grady (Skilled) helping SA share two of the top three spots.

Robbie McEwen's close fourth ensured the Queenslander kept the yellow jersey
for Saturday's race, also at Geelong, but at a new circuit in the Botanic Gardens,
starting also at 5.30pm.
Hilton Clarke (SBR-Colnago) was one of the fallen, and it now makes it extremely
difficult for him to win the title, which he was so determined to take out after
finishing second last year. He has accrued 16 points along with O'Grady, Vogels
and Simon Gerrans (Jayco), the winner on day two. However McEwen now has 29
points and Aitken 26.
The sprint leader is New Zealander Gregg Henderson (SBR Colnago) who won two
events today and has already amassed 21 points, 11 ahead of his nearest rival
Victorian Robert Tighello ((Promotion Cycles-Carnegie Caulfield).

In the women's Classic it remains much more open, with six riders separated
by 10 points.
Victory today went to Victorian Elizabeth Williams, who won with a sprinting
break down the long straight from Katie Bates (NSWIS) and Rochelle Gilmore (NSWIS)
who failed to finish on day two. That gave her the title of Australian Women's
Criterium Champion, as tonight's race was designated as such.
The six still in contention for the overall are Bates 29, Hayley Rutherford
(WAIS), 22, Williams 11, Alison Wright (ACT) also 21, Gilmore 20 and Katie Mactier
18.
Bates is also the overall leader in the sprints with a three point lead over
Olivia Gollan, of Queensland.
