Crown rider Robbie McEwen and Skilled's No. 1 team rider Stuart O’Grady failed
to chase down breakaway Jayco rider Simon Gerrans at the Portarlington leg of
the five-day Jayco Geelong Bay Cycling Classic today.
McEwen managed to snatch second place from his arch rival, leaving the spoils
of victory to Gerrans, who described his victory as equal to his Australian
Under 23 title of 12 months ago.
"Standing between such great two riders up on the podium was a buzz," said
Gerrans, who heads for a Norwegian Category III team (Team Krone) based in France
later this month.
Gerrans made his bold bid 10 laps out on the hilly circuit, and got to within
half a lap lead, making it all but impossible to be picked up.
The unluckiest of riders was sprint leader New Zealander Gregg Henderson (SBR-Colnago)
who slipped on the final corner and crashed. However he is confident he will
ride tomorrow in the third round at Geelong's Eastern reach.
Baden Cooke, who fell heavily on day one, missed today's racing, but is hopeful
to return to the saddle tomorrow.

In the women's event Kate Bates from NSW took over the leader's mantle with
a strong third behind ACT rider Oenone Wood and Hayley Rutherford (NSW). The
day one victor Rochelle Gilmore retired feeling unwell half way through the
race.
Wood described the win as her best yet and is confident that she can continue
her good form into day three.
Bates said that now she has the Yellow Jersey she aims to make it tough for
Gilmore and the other challengers to grab it back.
