57th Vuelta a EspañaSpain, September 7- 29, 2002Live report Results Profile Previous stage Next stage Stage 6 - September 12: Granada - La Pandera (Jaen), 153.1 kmHeras mounts Vuelta challenge, Sevilla leads overallBy Chris Henry Roberto Heras, leader of the US Postal Service team and winner of the 2000 Vuelta, soloed to victory at the summit of La Pandera today. After US Postal's impressive second place in the opening team time trial, Heras has sent the first clear signal that he himself is ready to challenge for this year's overall title, climbing with the same speed that impressed many in the mountains of this year's Tour de France. Kelme's Oscar Sevilla also followed up on his strong performance of yesterday, taking third place in today's stage and assuming the overall lead, ahead of Alexandre Vinokourov (Telekom) and Heras. The stage started in what is becoming typical Vuelta fashion, with an early break sparked by young Cofidis rider Médéric Clain, who still wears the orange jersey as leader of the mountains classification. Today's breakaway, which again went after only 5km of racing, was larger than previous days and contained representatives from most of the major teams. With the day's climbing coming at the end of the stage, no major threats to the overall were present in the break, although former Vuelta winner Melchor Mauri (Milaneza-MSS) was along for the ride. Jan Hruska was ONCE's watch dog for the group. At the top of the first climb, the Alto de las Ecebras, Médéric Clain fulfilled his daily mission and took the mountain points, allowing him to keep his orange jersey for yet another day. Today's stage began at a higher pace than yesterday, with riders covering 88.1km in the first two hours of racing. Though the peloton was content to let the break ride for the first half of the race, today's escape never gained much more than 4 minutes, led on a steady chase of the lead group by ONCE's Jörg Jaksche and Rafael Diaz Justo, and Saeco's Gerrit Glomser. The leading group was still around 3'30" ahead as it passed through the city of Jaen and the intermediate points sprint. Alessio's Raffaele Ferrara took the sprint, ahead of Médéric Clain, who seems determined to get into the mix at every opportunity. But as the group headed into the final 35km of the stage, which included two major climbs, the peloton was growing increasingly anxious behind. Climbing out of Jaen, the lead group began to splinter and the leaders' advantage began to crumble. Over the next 10km the peloton succeeded in cutting over one minute off the break's advantage, in advance of the 11km climb of the Puerto de los Villares. Kelme's Antonio Tauler attacked to take the next intermediate sprint, and carried on with his move, followed briefly by Jazztel's Serguei Smetanine, who soon enough fell by the wayside. Tauler pressed on, the lone leader at this point, powering up the climb in his big chainring. But behind the real race was about to take shape, as Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) decided to test the waters with a move off the front of the peloton. Simoni succeeded in creating a split at the head of the peloton, taking with him several strong riders, including Vinokourov, Oscar Camenzind (Phonak), Pietro Caucchioli (Alessio), Felix Garcia Casas (Big Mat), and iBanesto's Aitor Osa. This group forced the pace, largely under the pressure of Simoni, and proceeded to pick up (and pass) the remnants of the original 16 man break. By this point Euskaltel's Iker Flores had replaced Tauler at the head of the race, riding strongly on his own and keeping the hard-charging Simoni group at bay with 1'30" advantage and 16km left to race. Today's stage was expected to cause more fireworks amongst the leaders, as the climbs- particularly the final ascent to Pandera, were steeper and more varied than the previous day's interminable 37km ramp to Sierra Nevada. The pure climbers were finally expected to come to the fore, and on the penultimate climb, it was Saeco's Simoni, the lowest-placed favorite on GC, looking to make his mark on the 2nd category Puerto de los Villares. Simoni's chase group steadily reduced Flores' advantage up front, with help from former world champion Oscar Camenzind, who happened to be celebrating his birthday today. Flores crossed the top of the climb with 37 seconds in hand over the chasers, and began the 5km descent before the final difficulty of the day. Simoni's efforts in the chase group helped create a further selection, and eight riders crossed the summit together in search of Flores, and with a 1'21" advantage over the peloton, which contained the remainder of the pre-race favorites. Both Simoni and Vinokourov worked relentlessly, as by this point either of the two had the opportunity to take not only the stage, but also the overall lead. As the race his the slopes of final climb to Pandera, Flores lead Simoni's group by only 45 seconds, and the peloton was charging from behind. Simoni, Vinokourov and company caught Flores with 7km remaining to the summit, and the battle the for stage victory began anew. In the peloton behind Simoni's group, US Postal finally made its appearance at the head of affairs, and in a repeat of yesterday's performance it was strongman Christian Vandevelde taking up the pacemaking with Roberto Heras tucked in behind. Vandevelde rode himself into the ground in an effort to reduce the gap to Simoni's group, and largely succeeded by the time he reached his limit, leaving the remainder of the work to Heras. Dancing off the front of the group and not missing a beat, Heras showed quickly that he was up to the task, as the race hit the steepest portions of the climb. Only Sevilla could come close to matching the Postal rider's pace, and the two quickly began to pass the remnants of Simoni's group, searching for defiant the Saeco rider up ahead. With 4km to go, Heras caught Vinokourov, Fabian Jeker, and Iban Mayo, attacking immediately to pass the small but select group. As he did, Oscar Camenzind had a run-in with a spectator, and although he remained upright, his momentum was lost at the critical moment of the race. Soon enough Heras was on Simoni's wheel, wasting no time and accelerating once more as only pure climbers can, setting off alone now in search of the stage victory. Sevilla dug deep to chase Heras, but there was no catching the former Vuelta winner. Nonetheless, Sevilla had the motivation of assuming the overall lead at the finish, and fought out the finish with Simoni and Mayo, as Vinokourov worked at his limits a behind, making great gains himself. Heras crossed the line in full flight, sparing the victory salute and thinking more of his important time gains than a flashy victory. His riding said enough, and besides his time on the winner's podium, a jump to third place overall offered plenty of reward. Seventeen seconds later, Simoni rallied to win the sprint for second place, ahead of new race leader Sevilla and Euskaltel's Iban Mayo. Vinokourov followed at 48 seconds, along with Aitor Gonzalez and Felix Garcia Casas, who gave Big Mat two strong performances in two days of climbing. Race favorite and early leader Joseba Beloki suffered on the final climb, losing nearly a minute and a half and digging himself a bit of a hole behind Sevilla and Heras, who each look set to do battle as the race unfolds. The Vuelta returns to the plains tomorrow, offering another chance for the sprinters and permitting Oscar Sevilla to enjoy some time in the leader's jersey before the next serious test. Mario Cipollini has already announced that he will say adios to the Vuelta on Sunday, but given his performance so far, tomorrow might be another day for the Lion King to stamp his authority on the sprint finish.
