Stage 5 - September 11: El Ejido o Almeria - Sierra Nevada, 198 km
Trentin at the top in Sierra Nevada
Zarrabeitia into the lead as Sevilla gains time on GC favourites

26 year old Guido Trentin (Cofidis) has won the biggest race of his career, taking today's first mountain stage finishing atop the 37 km climb of Sierra Nevada. Trentin profited from the work of BigMat's Felix Garcia Casas after the pair had attacked a small leading group with 7 km to go, with Trentin accelerating away in the final 500m to win by 8 seconds.
Crossing the line in fourth place was ONCE's Mikel Zarrabeitia, who took over the leader's jersey from teammate Joseba Beloki. The latter finished in the favourites group, but lost time to an animated Oscar Sevilla (Kelme), who gained 40 seconds and moved himself up to 5th in the general classification.
The stage was an important test to see who the contenders are in this year's Vuelta, and the outcome was quite an interesting reshuffle of the general classification. ONCE stayed on top with Zarrabeitia and Jaksche moving into first and third, but Trentin, Alexandre Vinokourov, Oscar Sevilla and Haimar Zubeldia also showed that they should be watched in the stages to come. On the other hand, Beloki, Igor Gonzalez, Heras, Casagrande, Mancebo, Simoni, Escartin and Casero are now between 1'30 and 2'40 behind.

The fifth stage started in warm but slightly overcast conditions, with a hint of rain later in the stage. With the race set to explode on the final climb of Sierra Nevada (37 km at 5%), there was predictably an early breakaway of riders who for various reasons wanted to get ahead. One of them was mountains leader Mederic Clain (Cofidis), who knew if he could pick up points on the first two climbs then he would have an excellent chance of staying in the jersey at the end of the day, despite the 30 points on offer at Sierra Nevada. Clain succeeded in his aim, winning both the Cat. 2 Alto de Bérchules and the Cat. 3 Alto de Lanzarón, enabling him to remain in the jersey by two points from Guido Trentin at the end of the stage.
The rest of the break included Stéphane Berges (Ag2R), Oscar Laguna Garcia (Relax Fuenlabrada), Victor Hugo Peña (USPS), Jose Vicente Garcia Acosta (iBanesto), Rafael Diaz Justo (ONCE), and Jesus Manzano (Kelme). With several of the top teams there, including Diaz Justo as the virtual leader, the pressure was put on Saeco to keep things under control. The gap grew to around 7 minutes, put no further as the Saeco red train set a steady tempo at the front of the peloton for Gilberto Simoni and Danilo Di Luca.

There were in the meantime several crashes in the peloton, including an early one involving Oscar Sevilla (who was shaken but unhurt) and a more serious one at 50 km to go involving Roberto Laiseka (Euskaltel). The lanky Basque rider hit his head quite hard and was bleeding heavily as he was taken away by ambulance. Fortunately he escaped without any major fractures or concussion, but his Vuelta is over.
By the foot of the climb to Sierra Nevada, the break's lead was just over 3 minutes as Fassa Bortolo joined Saeco in the chase. In the lead group, the attacks started right from the bottom in typical Spanish style as Manzano, then Garcia Acosta, Oscar Laguna and Manzano again took turns soloing off the front. Manzano stayed away until 15 km to go when he was passed by Luis Perez (Team Coast) and Alberto Lopez de Munain (Euskaltel) who had left the peloton on the wide roads in the first half of the climb. As they did so, two of the favourites Santiago Botero (Kelme) and David Millar (Cofidis) were fading off the back of the shrinking peloton, eventually losing 6'08 and 2'54 respectively.

The attacking became more frequent in the second half of the climb, with small groups continuously getting away but being reabsorbed by the bunch. Munain and Perez were caught as finally a group with Alex Vinokourov (Telekom), Pablo Lastras and Santi Blanco (iBanesto), Mikel Zarrabeitia and José Azevedo (ONCE), Aitor Gonzalez (Kelme), Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel), Guido Trentin (Cofidis), Felix Garcia Casas (BigMat), Rui Sousa (Maia) established itself in front of the peloton. With 8 kilometres to go they had a lead of 50 seconds, with Christian Vandevelde (USPS) trying to limit the damage in the peloton for his leader Roberto Heras.
At the 7 km to go banner Guido Trentin took off, with only Garcia Casas able to go with him. The pair worked together for a while until Garcia Casas took over, with Trentin seemingly in trouble but able to hang on. The group behind them started to split up but still had enough of an advantage to hold off the modestly sized peloton to the top of the mountain.

Finally with 5 km to go, Oscar Sevilla launched his attack from the peloton to put time into Beloki and the rest. Beloki, struggling a little with a knee injury after he hit his handlebars, was not able to match the acceleration, however his teammate Jörg Jaksche could, and sat behind Sevilla as he ate into the 1'10 lead of Trentin and Garcia Casas.
Sevilla has lost several kilos since the Tour in an attempt to improve his climbing, and it paid off today as he put 40 seconds into Beloki's group, finishing the stage in 7th place, 47 seconds behind the winner. If he can keep his form, he certainly looks like the best climber in the Vuelta. Also take note of Saeco's Danilo Di Luca, who put in a late burst in his 39x21, almost catching Sevilla and Jaksche at the top.

As the leaders of the stage Guido Trentin and Felix Garcia Casas neared the top of the climb, Trentin suddenly accelerated from behind Garcia Casas, who could not match it and had to concede defeat to the Italian, who took the stage win and came very close to the leader's jersey. However ONCE's Mikel Zarrabeitia had ridden well over the final part of the climb too, and only lost 10 seconds to Trentin which gave him the overall lead.
When it was all over, there was a considerable reordering of the classification as was expected, with tomorrow's stage from Granada to La Pandera promising more fireworks. The shorter steeper finishing climb of La Pandera will the lighter climbing types, and we could see Sevilla, Simoni, Mancebo and Heras in their element.
