Zabel Finally Grabs Maillot Jaune

Drama abounded today as Australian champion Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Adecco) took a wide open sprint victory in Reims in ahead of Erik Zabel, while the Telekom man finally conquered the Maillot Jaune via time bonus sprints in St. Menehould, Suippes and the final sprint. "It would have been nice to beat McEwen in the sprint," said Zabel afterwards. "The last time I had (the Maillot Jaune) was in '98, after the 2nd stage, but this time we really had to fight for it."
Zabel and his Telekom squad will work to keep the golden tunic, but it seems that the 32 year old sprinter is already skeptical. "With strong teams like USPS and ONCE, it will be difficult to keep my (MJ) after tomorrow," said the new TDF leader.
McEwen took his 13th win of the season, his second career TDF victory after his win on Champs-Elysees in 1999 and his third Grand Tour stage win of the 2002 season. "This is my best win of the season," a grinning McEwen told French TV after the stage. "I've also won in front of Cipo in the Giro, but this win was better. It was magnificent!"

Despite his mega season so far, McEwen wasn't clear on his future. "The situation with the new Lotto-Domo team isn't really clear for anybody at the moment," said a concerned McEwen in the post-race press conference. "I probably know less about the situation than the journalists do. There are number of riders on the Lotto team who signed contracts for next year (2003) and in some cases for two years. We have been told that those contracts will be respected if the riders want to stay, but there has to be more clarity because riders have also been hearing different messages about the actual situation."
With no love lost between the dynamic Brisbane rider and the likely new sporting manager of Lotto-Domo Patrick Lefevere, McEwen will likely be looking elsewhere in 2003 for his daily bread.
Credit Agricole's string of lousy luck continued today as Stuart O'Grady had an attack of tachycardia in the last 50km of the stage and his high, irregular heartbeat made the 28 year old rider from Adelaide feel so poorly that two team-mates had to push O'Grady to keep him from getting dropped.

O'Grady's last bad bout was at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. "My heart was beating at 230 beats a minute for about an hour and I was having trouble breathing," said O'Grady after the stage. "It's happened before and I knew it would pass. It's not very easy since my normal maximum (hr) is 190. But I was never going to abandon since I knew it would pass."
How it unfolded
It didn't take long today for FDJ.com's elder statesman Jacky "Dudu" Durand to go on the attack. With the team's objective to take back the Maillot Pois captured by Christophe Mengin on Sunday's Stage 1, it was time for the old guard on the mostly youth-oriented FDJ.com squad to put the pressure on AG2R's Stéphane Berges, who took the climber's tunic from Mengin yesterday.
Dudu didn't waste any time today; attacking the first climb of the day 3km from the start in Metz, the rawboned 35 year old Mayennais went on the offensive, Mengin quickly reclaimed his Maillot Pois by grabbing the 3rd place sprint points while Up the cat 4 Cote de Gravelotte, Dudu went on the move and was joined by Bonjour man Franck Renier, from the same hometown as Dudu but 7 years younger.
After a half hearted chase for 15 minutes, the peloton succumbed to the inevitable and let the duo go on their own for a warm, windy afternoon ride across the rolling Meuse countryside onto the Marne Valley. Dudu had done his job to keep any other ranked rider in the KOM competition get points, and Mengin used his sprint speed and climbing legs to reconquer the dotted jersey.
The Dudu and homeboy Renier train kept a rollin' and eventually the duo built a lead of 11'10" after 68 km in the tiny flyblown village of Blercourt, but Telekom and Lotto were already riding hard tempo behind. Zabel wanted the jersey and McEwen wanted the stage win and so the chase began. Over hill and dale the chase began through the rolling farm country of northeast France towards the champagne city of Reims.
With 50 km to go in Somme-Suippe, the lead of the Mayennais duo was 5'00 and falling under the combined Lotto and Telekom tempo onslaught. Once again, the irresistible pace of the sprinters squads forced the inevitable peloton groupeé when Dudu and Renier were caught with 8km to go. The sprinters teams kicked it into overdrive and laid it down into Reims along the Marne Canal.

Thor Hushovd made a power surge in the last 500 meters, but the sprinters passed the giant Viking with 200 meters to go, McEwen went left with Zabel on his wheel, while Baden Cooke went right it was an Aussie drag race until the final 50 meters, when Zabel made his move to pick up 2nd place and ensure his Maillot Jaune. As for wonder boy Rubens Bertogliati, the 23 year old from Lugano has dropped to third, but with a stage win and two days in the Maillot Jaune (among the youngest in TDF history at 23 along with Jacques Anquetil and Felice Gimondi), the Lampre man's champagne dreams are over for now...ther than what he might order from room service.
Not so quiet on the Western Front tomorrow with mostly uncertain weather conditions forecast for Wednesday's challenging Stage 4 67.5 team time trial from champagne center Epernay to Chateau-Thierry via the 3.5km cote d'Igny. If the weather turns bad, this stage could see some weaker teams lose major time.
