Stage 3 - Tuesday July 9: Metz - Reims, 174.5 km

By Tim Maloney, European editor

If this is Tuesday, it must be France! Finally Le Tour returns to La France, heading east from Metz at 12:45, the capital of the Lorraine region into the ubiquitous northwest wind that sweeps across Northern France from the English Channel. Lance Armstrong may feel at home, since Metz was where he won his first Tour TT in 1999, but flat Stage 3 to Reims, capital of the Champagne region, will likely be the first real sprinters stage. 11 years ago, Djamolaidine Abdujaparov won the last TDF stage in Reims and popped the Champagne cork of victory. Will Belgian champ Tom Steels succeed him or will Robbie McEwen earn the right to spray the bubbly in Reims?
