Mayolo Takes Millhouse Women's National Criterium Title

Saturn team report by Giana Roberge

After her convincing win yesterday, Diet Rite's Tina Mayolo-Pic was clearly the rider to beat in today's National Criterium Championships. With the likes of Laura Van Gilder, defending champion Nicole Freedman, and Suzanne Sonye all with their eyes on the stars and stripes jersey, Mayolo and her Diet Rite team had their work cut out for them. In the end, their efforts paid big dividends with Mayolo crowned as the 2002 National Criterium Champion.

Unlike last year, this year's weather was spectacular, with low humidity, clear skies and no wind. The largest field ever assembled at Downer's Grove with 91 riders, started out the 50 kilometer race quietly. After the first ten laps, the Saturn Team clearly wanted to stir things up and began a series of attacks. Jessica Phillips and guest rider Megan Elliot did a great job at shedding many riders, but the stronger riders seemed content to let the race come down to a field sprint. With only Saturn attempting to get away from the field, any small breaks were immediately consumed by the field, usually from the efforts of Diet Rite.

With two laps to go a crash in the middle of the field obviously made the top sprinters nervous. Intead of relying on their leadouts, all sprinters moved to the front to stay safe. With 400 meters to go, and two remaining corners, Mayolo jumped hard, followed by Becky Conzelman. Mayolo cleared the field, leaving Freedman, Van Gilder and Sonye to close the gap. But they were unable to come by Mayolo, and she took the win handily. Conzelman was second, Van Gilder was third.
