Day 1 - August 17: USCF International Women's Open

Mayolo-Pic leads out and stays clear

By Giana Roberge, Team Saturn

The USCF International Women's Open began under cloudy conditions which assisted in keeping the temperature moderate. The 40-minute timed event got off to a quick start with an early attack from the Saturn Team and Diet Rite.

As the game of attack and counterattacks ensued, many groups formed only to quickly be reabsorbed once again with Team Diet Rite riding very well and protecting their sprinter Tina Mayolo-Pic. At the end of the 40 minutes, it was clear that the winner would come out of the field sprint, bringing both the Diet Rite and the Saturn Teams to the front to guide their sprinters to the line. Also in the hunt were Laura Van Gilder and Nicole Freedman.

However, coming out of the last corner first and holding her gap to the line was Mayolo-Pic, securing a big win for the Diet Rite Team. Second was Saturn Suzanne Sonye, who had powered her way to the front and narrowly missed the win. Third was Freedman. With the Stars and Stripes on the line tomorrow, look for the same names, Mayolo, Sonye, Freedman and Van Gilder to be key players.
