Mount Joy road race

Mount Joy, PA, April 15, 2006

By Michael Doupe

Sometimes a little effort goes a long way, but sometimes the long way leads to victory. This was the result for Will Letendre (Boston Scientific) on Saturday, when a pull at the front of the Pro/1/2 field made a little gap - just seven miles into the 51 mile race. Before Letendre could decide what to do, Bart Torre (Alliance Environmental) popped out of the field, and with a quick word of encouragement to Letendre, the two led for the rest of the race - but never more than three minutes in front of a strong field of teams from Monstr Health, Meredith Group-GPOA, and Evolution Cycling, among others.

The day did not start well for either racer, however. Letendre dropped his chain while at the front of the pack on the first short, steep hill. He managed to put it back on as the tail of the field passed by, and quickly rejoined the front. After the first five miles, Torre dangled off of the pack - suffering from stomach cramps, but he worked through it, rejoined the field, then hit the front as Letendre made his winning "attack".

On an undulating, rural course, much of the challenge came from the strong crosswinds, which minimized the power of the chasing echelons. The closest attempt to join the two-man time trial came from George "Skip" Menard from the Monstr Health squad, but when his solo effort could get no closer than 30 seconds, he succumbed to the wind and returned to the pack. Perhaps expecting their strong man to make the break, Monstr Health, together with Torres' Alliance Environmental squad, slowed the pack to a three minute gap which could not be closed.

The winning move was not a drag race sprint between the two riders, however, as Letendre attacked up a short rise four miles out. He had noticed during their ride that Torre was clutching at his sides on the hills - still feeling the remains of the early cramps. "When he (Letendre) attacked, it made me forget about the side-stitch, but then I realized how bad my legs felt", said Torre, who managed to close to five seconds by the line, where he pounded his handlebars in frustration as the Boston Scientific racer sat up for his two handed celebration.

Letendre, from Alta, New Hampshire, was in the area visiting his in-laws for the Easter holiday, and he did not have the benefit of teammates or knowledge of the area's stronger racers. "In New England," he said, "it's easy - you just follow McCormack", referring to former USPro national champion Mark McCormack. On this day, however, Letendre showed that his wheels are pretty good at leading, too.

The Mount Joy Road Race presented by Pro-Am Cycling was the third stop of the fourteen races in the RedRoseRaces.com Pennsylvania Super Series. Events include road races, criteriums, and two stage races. For more information, check out RedRoseRaces.com.
