Halley takes sprint finish in A Grade

By Mark Dunlop

Another large field of over 60 riders in six grades contested the 5th race of the Rockhampton Cycling Club's Road Season on Saturday. A, B and C Grade rode the Cawarral circuit, with A and B completing an extra 9 km detour enroute over several leg-snapping hills.

With several of the club's A Grade riders having a break after the Australian Track Championships, the three remaining A Graders raced with the fourteen B Grade riders. In the light breeze, the pace was hot from the start with most of the first 23 km covered at 40+ km/h. Despite the fast pace and four serious attacks at key points in the race, the bunch remained largely intact and the finish came down to a sprint with Russell Halley winning A Grade and Wayne Clifford taking out B Grade.

The C Grade race over 51km unfolded in much the same way, with the placegetters slipping away to a 3 second advantage 1000 metres from the finish, pursued by a bunch of 9 riders. Sid McCrohon, a top level rider from the 1980's making a comeback this season, crossed the line in first place, with Gavin Hopes and Jeremy Hogg taking the minor placings.

In the 38km D Grade race, Trent Russell and Kendall Townsend maintained a 27 second gap in the closing stages of the race to hold off the pursuing bunch of 12. Kevin McBean won the bunch sprint to take third.

Labour Day Cup Handicap winners Sarah Edwards and Roxanne Smith easily accounted for their E Grade opponents with new rider Chris Findlay third.

Andrew Lohmann took the honours in the 5km F Grade event in 12:14, finishing 1 second ahead of David Smidt with Bryce Lohmann a further 2 seconds back in third place.
