Illawarra CC Scratch Race

August 16, 2003

Rourke rampage

Adam Rourke lives by the adage that you will never know what could have happened if you don't have a go. Rourke attacked early in the A grade 44.5km scratch race on Saturday afternoon, time trialed for the next 40km and crossed the line 16 seconds infront of the charging bunch.

The scratch races were held over three grades, with good sized fields in each grade. C grade only raced once to Calderwood road and once to the Hall for 41km. All the riders enjoyed the good racing conditions.

Rourke took advantage of the unwillingness of the riders in the main bunch to organise a concerted chase and rode gallantly to a well deserved win.

Dylan Forbes out powered the perpetual sprint winner Tim Morris for second place, just centimetres in front of Morris.

A large field of fifteen riders set off for the B grade race. The workload was spread around between the riders throughout the race. Dave Morris and Lionel Covington were prominent early as was Bobby Krstevski and Mitchell Burns.

The first big move came from Scott Turnbull on the first ascent of Marshall Mount, but as there was about another 31km to go to the finish no one was willing to go on with the move.

As the race progressed Austin Pitman and Gary Pearson moved to the front and kept the pressure on. Because there were so many riders no single rider was able to get away.

With a couple of kilometres to the finish Burns made his trademark attack and crossed the line seven seconds in front of the main bunch. Led over the line by Frank Tortorici and Pearson.

Tony Burke celebrated his second race back after several years off the bike with a well timed sprint win over Michael Comensoli and Vince O'Dwyer in the C grade race.

Meanwhile at the NSW Masters Team Time Trial Championships held at Calga on Sunday, the bronze medal was awarded to the senior team of Rob Calladine, Lionel Covington, Frank Tortorici and Tim Devlin, who recorded the third fastest Masters 4+ time of the day for the over 45 years division.

A younger Masters team consisting of Dylan Forbes, Jeff Gray, Neil Midgley and Dave Russell also attempted their 35-44 years division.

In a ride which took them over a hilly course the senior team had to contend with delay caused by a hindering vehicle and a puncture which put Devlin down over a minute. The team still managed a time of 35m 14s for the 22k course just 1m:49s behind the winners.
