Mildura-Coomealla CC Club Championship

Riverside, August 2, 2003

McNally grabs club title in final sprint

By Lantern Rouge

Rob McNally took out the Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club's Championship narrowly from Michael Shipsides and a fast finishing, but erratic, Sean Gallagher. Gallagher lucky to not have been relegated after having interfered the ride of other sprinting riders by not riding in a straight line, no protest was lodged.

The weather conditions don't get any better than last Saturday, a fine day of 20 degrees celsius, no cloud and a light north westerly breeze. A healthy field of 21 riders turned out and were greeted by the sight of the Club's new marquee. Decked out in the Club's racing colours and manufactured by Kanopy Kompany, looking fantastic.

The prickles were out though unfortunately and 3 riders, Ian Beruldsen, Peter Mills and Brendan Liddle all punctured mid race. Other calamities befell Arthur Anderson (stomach complaint), Peter Winton (mechanical), Greg Scott (recurring back soreness) and a painful hamstring cramp to top sprinter Mark Busch ruining their day.

The championship race was a slow paced event this year with no one rider able to make a break and stay away for long, the mindset became one of "saving" for the last kilometres. McNally waited until 250m out and from 5th wheel, strung out behind the never-say-die Ian Brade, he charged to the line with Shipsides in his wake.

Next week a 56km handicap race at Riverside, start time 1:30pm.
