Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CC/Sutherland Club ChampionshipsOctober 11, 2003Twenty Sutherland riders ventured down the expressway to race with the Caesars Illawarra Cycle Club last Saturday afternoon. The races served as a combine and the Sutherland Club championships. Even under the demanding conditions caused by the strong winds quite a few riders put in some very decent times. Race 1 was the Sutherland elite riders and Illawarra A grade riders over 62km. Straight from the start, Adam Rourke tested the waters by riding off the front of the bunch, with Dylan Forbes immediately joining him. Sutherland's Jeff Cook combined with Graham Rutter and the two set off in pursuit. The four riders were together by the 7km mark. They never looked back and swapped off turns efficiently. They pulled away from the chasers with every pedal stroke. At the end of the first lap Rutter pulled out but the other three continued on with it. With 12km to go to the finish, Cook rode away from the other two. Forbes attacked Rourke with 4km to go and that was the finishing order. Race 2 incorporated the Masters 1-3 Sutherland riders and Illawarra B grade over 44.5km. The race followed a similar pattern to race 1. Sutherlands Ian Bradford, John Peters and Chris Harris rode away with Jeff Gray. Rob Calladine and Frank Tortorici never gave up and soldiered on. Bradford rode away on the easy side up Marshall Mount, the other three tried to organise the chase but Peters snapped his crank and Harris blew up. Gray crossed the line only 24 seconds behind Bradford. Calladine edged Tortorici out for third place. Race 3 combined the Masters 4 and above with the Illawarra C grade over 37.5km. Five riders rode away on the first lap and were never looked like being caught. Gary Lidro attacked on the second lap and was chased all the way to the finish by Garry Buckley and Kevin Donavan, who finished in that order. Michael Commesoli rode a good race and finished seventh. Congratulations go to Grant Law who achieved a second place in the sprint event and several minor placings at the World masters track championships at Manchester. For the first time ever one country supplied all three place getters in an event. Sydney's Geoff Stoker was first, Grant second and Mitch Law third. It was also the first time two brothers placed in the one event. Grant must have got a few pointers from his bother-in-law, Olympic champion and Tour de France stage winner Brad McGee. Next week's race is a 27.5km scratch race, group 5 to marshal.
