Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Carnegie Caulfield CCGlenvale Crescent, Mulgrave, Sunday November 30, 2003By Mal Sawford A strong and gusty northerly wind swept Melbourne's South East, bringing thunderstorms and lightning bolts with it. Amazingly, despite being squarely in the middle of the rain belt, the Glenvale Crescent circuit was largely spared, with only a small amount of rain falling during racing. All grades were able to race without the circuit become particularly slippery. Paul Richards (Team MG-ZT) attacked A Grade out of the blocks, quickly followed by Christian Lademann (ZVVZ - Ed System). Start line attacks (usually by Ray Turner!) are not uncommon, but they are often nothing more than a chance for the offenders to get in a quick warm up before the race starts in earnest. Lademann was obviously well and truly warmed up, however, and the 1999 World Team Pursuit Champion was instantly up to speed and making light work of the strong winds! Despite a fast pace chase from the rapidly shrinking bunch, who have seen Lademann's power unleashed in small doses over the past few weeks, the leading pair took only twenty five minutes to lap the field on the 1.2 kilometer circuit. In the second half of the race, a break by Mikkeli Godfree (Team MGZT), Michael Tolhurst and Mitchell Docker (Hillman Cycles) opened a handy lead, with Godfree's European cyclocross skills showing in the damp, high speed corners. The remnants of the bunch were still keen to race for third, and the race came back together at three to go. Dylan Boone (Fitzroy Cycles) lead the bunch home, with Docker and Godfree next home despite their efforts in the break. Jamie Goddard (Le Tour Cycles) claimed the final prize. The main prize went to Lademann, who had too much strength for Richards in the final dash. The damp roads (and B Grade's reputation for the occasional crash) kept their numbers down a little, but the good sized bunch adjusted to the conditions well, and only a last lap slide from Daniel Strangio spoilt a perfect safety record! Four riders escaped the field midway through the hour, with Under 17 star Mario Giramondo (Giramondo Sportswear) forcing the pace. Michael Bailey (Alchemy) churned his 52x14 single speed machine into the break, along with Karl Wood (Pro-Motion Bicycles) and Danny Kah. Kah lost contact, leaving the others to fight out the win, with Giramondo delivery a classy sprint to take the win. James Shepherdson led the bunch home ahead of Tyrin Simpson, with many of the favoured sprinters out of position after the Strangio's high speed exit from the race! Helen Kelly debuted her new RONA outfit with a win in the premier women's division, coming in just behind the main bunch. C Grade saw an early break look good, containing Team Alex Series Leader Simon Lancaster (BikeNOW), Richard Cormick, Michael Downing (Le Tour), Andrew Snelling and Josh Akarsu. Despite the subtle blocking from the rest of the Downing Clan, the break was reeled in at the thirty minute mark. Downing and Lancaster jumped away again with ten minutes to race, with Pete Knight quick to follow. The chase split the field, with Laurie Noonan, Cormick and Simon Prentice among those to make contact. Knight opened a twenty meter advantage approaching the bell, and in a strong ride over the final lap, held on to take the win by half a wheel, as a good sprint from big Simon Prentice brought him desperately close in the final meters. Noonan claimed third, ahead of Lancaster with another impressive ride, good enough to move him to B Grade. Cheryl Walker (Victorian State Home Loans) took out the well contested Women's division, but was chased all the way to the line by Emily Phillips (Le Tour), with Gemma Goyne back in the results after some heavy training had seen her results suffer recently. Pete Johnson and Steve Leishman proved too strong for D Grade in the tough conditions. The pair rode away midway through the event, and were only just short of lapping the chasing bunch by the finish. Johnson took the win, with both riders looking good for C Grade next time round. Matt Kendt led the twelve surviving chasers home for third, ahead of Curtis Yildirim. The Women's contingent found the conditions particularly testing, with Ferne Walklate leading home Louise Bourke and Kim Petersen (Croydon Cycleworks) just over a lap behind the men. Lancaster's promotion to B Grade gives him a healthy lead in the $7000 Team Alex Series, with 82 points. Paul Kelly trails with 57, ahead of Matt Jensen (55) and Warren Knevit (53). Ferne Walklate (38) maintains her narrow lead over Cheryl Walker (36) in the women's competition. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). Twilight races are held on Tuesday evenings at Sandown racecourse, on the car racing circuit, with all grades starting at 6.30pm. Entry is via Sandown Rd, from 5.30pm. All holders of 2003 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2004 licenses are also now available. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts racing clinics in E Grade.
