Whitmore Square Criteriums Adeliade, November 9, 2003

Rex rules Wheelrace

As was ordered, perfect weather greeted the cyclist who raced at Whitmore square today. Fast and furious criteriums were contested by all grades with riders hoping for the chance to make the final of the Mancorp Cup Wheelrace. With the circuit being 600 metres around, no wind, it was harder for riders attempting to break away from their grades. The riders who tried, in their groups of three or four were easily picked up when the bunch put the hammer down. The criteriums a little shorter in time than regular all came down to a serious bunch sprint, with the highlight from B grade, Russell Gill coming from nowhere and flying to the line to take his win. All five placegetters from each grade made the final of the Mancorp Cup Wheelrace over 1800m (3 laps).

Riders who made the final were then allocated a handicap mark according to their ability, Mat Rex was the Scratch rider riding from the back of the field with the only lady racing today Sam Gooding riding from the 250 metre mark off limit. The race was fiercely fought out, with new rider Mat Hannan making the most of his handicap, riding straight past the three riders in front of him and going for the doctor. Mat opened up a lead of 60 meters over the front riders. The first two laps were over in an instance with three groups forming, the back, middle and front groups with Mat in front. With three quarters of a lap to go all the groups came together, but Mat was still out in front, just. The only scratch rider still going for it was Mat Rex and he had to get around the whole field with just two corners to go. 150m from the finish and Mat who was off the front ran out of steam and was swamped by the field, 100m from the line and riders were ten across the road. Now it looked like Steve Hampton in his Adelaide CC colours was going to take the win, but from nowhere weaving through the field switching left and right Mat Rex hit the front with 10 metres to go to win the Mancorp Cup Wheelrace with his hands in the air. Again Whitmore Square provided a handicap race where a scratchman won only in the last few metres.

This was then followed by the "No Hooha" motorpaced scratch race, an event not seen on the road before originating from track cycling. Thirty riders decided to take part in this inaugural event, where the riders are paced by a motorbike over a period of time at a relatively constant speed, which today was at 45-50 kph. It was hard for the motorbike to take the bends going any faster but not a problem for our cyclists. Mr Albert Bensimons started the riders off as the motorbike went through and the riders started their chase. Their race time was 20 minutes behind the bike and then five laps to go to the finish. Former cyclist Greg Rachmaninoff was riding the motorbike with the riders strung out in a long line behind him. The pace was too hot for some to start with especially when you were down the back and being flung everywhere not being able to get a sit in a draught. The bunch was slowly whittled down over the twenty minutes, with fifteen riders able to complete the twenty minutes of pacing. The pace didn't really slacken off after the motorbike left with attacks coming from a few riders trying to sneak a win. That is exactly how Ryan Milton won the event with a smart jump off the front with half a lap to go and no one being able to react quick enough to counter his move. A boxed in Mat rex was able to get out to come in second followed by a close Alan Gill. That race concluded the day's events.
