Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Carnegie Caulfield CCGlenvale Crescent, November 9, 2003Good weather and big fields return to Glenvale CrescentBy Mal Sawford Good weather was back again, for the first weekend in ages bringing two fine days, and a good field of over 150 riders to contest the weekly Sunday morning criteriums around the 1.2 kilometer Glenvale Crescent circuit. Difficulty clipping into his pedal delayed Ray Turner's (Bianchi) start line attack until the back straight, but Sugar Ray wasn't to be denied, and spent the first ten minutes off the front of the bunch warming up with the writer. Once the bunch decided to spring into life, the pace lifted and the more serious attacks started. Continuing his form from the last few weeks, Martin Bole was very aggressive, and featured in virtually every move. Others active early included Agostino Giramondo, Simon Walker (Victorian State Home Loans) and Cameron Wise (Pro-Motion Bicycles). With three laps to go, the final unsuccessful break was reeled in, and the result came down to a bunch sprint, a rarity in A Grade. Joel Leonard (Giramondo) took advantage of the lead oyt from the strong Giramondo squad, to record a narrow win over Barry Woods (ACR), team mate Graham Carlson and local track star Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles). Paul Kelly (SBR) spent a considerable period of time before the start of the B Grade race admiring the Team Alex Series prize on display, and made no secret of his intention to contend for some of the $7000 worth of prizes! He was on the attack midway through the event with training partner David Taylor (SBR), with the pair only reeled in in the closing stages. Kelly stayed at the front of the bunch, and rolled away again as the bunch eased. Promising junior rider Taigh Banson (CBDCycles) jumped across the gap, and the pair combined well to hold off the huge bunch, with the youngster's fresher legs prevailing in the sprint. Fast finishing Footscray veteran Glen Hutchinson lead the bunch home, with consistent place getter Russell Newnham hot on his heels. The C Grade race saw it's biggest field of the season, and unsurprisingly the race was decided with an all-in sprint, despite a late attack from super coach Bob Kelly (Tri-tech Coaching). Mathew Pegg took a good win, ahead of Vince Condello, Doug Reynolds and Matt Collins. Catherine Allen (Giramondo) claimed the Women's division, with a narrow win over Cheryl Walker (Victorian State Home Loans) in a strong field. Simon Lancaster took out D Grade's bunch kick, and looks to be headed towards C Grade soon, along with second place finisher Renato Liucci. Gary Cairnduff and Chris Dann rounded out the podium. Tess Downing (Le Tour Cycles) lead the large Women's contingent home, ahead of Lisa Friend (Bianchi) and Melissa Nichols. Twilight racing continues on Tuesday evening (Melbourne Cup Day) at Sandown racecourse, on the car racing circuit, with all grades starting at 6.30pm. Entry is via Sandown Rd, from 5.30pm. Saturday the 8th sees the gala opening of track racing for the season, with a re-union day planned, and featuring the 50th Anniversary Caulfield Cup on Wheels, worth a fantastic $1000 thanks to generous sponsorship from Bob Jane T-Mart. Michael Downing contiues to lead the Team Alex Series with 45 points. Son and father duo Matt and Kurt Jensen follow on 38 and 30. Rob Crowe and Simon Lancaster share third place with 30 points, while Ferne Walklate holds a naarow lead in the Women's competition on 22 points. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). Twilight races are held on Tuesday evenings at Sandown racecourse, on the car racing circuit, with all grades starting at 6.30pm. Entry is via Sandown Rd, from 5.30pm.
