Illawarra CC - Graeme Catterall Memorial

June 7, 2003

Ben Smith from Goulburn secured the coveted title of first and fastest time. In a nine up sprint, Smith was too strong just edging out Tim Morris for the coveted first place. Morris produced a full on out of the seat sprint as his seat fell off in the last 400m of the race.

Wollongong Fencing Services were very generous in adding to the prize pool on the day. The owner Colin Catterall said he was more than happy to assist the Club in perpetuating his father's name.

The gale force westerly winds wreaked havoc with the bunches. But due to the tenacity of bike riders 84 of the 96 entries started the race and 71 completed the 50km race distance.

With the conditions so tough it was always going to be a back markers race. The major move during the race came from Josh Wall and Morris. On the climb up Marshall Mount hill they left their block bunch rode through the 3:00 minute bunch and caught the 4:00 bunch on the climb up Hooker hill.

Wall continued on with it and set off in pursuit of the 5:30 bunch but Morris was having trouble with his seat and stayed with the 4:00 bunch.

In conjunction with remnants of the 5:30 bunch Wall rode through the rest of the field and with 15km to go he was in the lead with Frank Tortorici, Kirk Brown, Jeff Gray and David Walsh from Goulburn.

The hard riding scratch bunch Smith, Richard Vollebregt (Sth Highlands) and Shaun Lewis (Sth Highlands) had picked up Morris, James Williamson (Sth Highlands), Chad Balding (Sth Highlands) and Andrew Stewart on their way through the field.

The scratch group made contact with the Wall group with just on 5km of the race to go. Unfortunately for Wall he had done too much work and lost contact in the final few kilometres.

Due to the strong tailwind it was a very high speed sprint with Smith edging out Morris and Lewis. Followed by Vollebregt, Tortorici, Walsh, Stewart, Gary and Williamson.

After round two of the Interclub series Andrew Stewart is in first place on 22 points followed by Jeff Gray on 18 points and Ben Smith on 17 points. Smith is leading the fastest time competition on 10 points with Richard Vollebregt on 6 points. Illawarra Club is tied for first in the Club competition with Goulburn Club on 9 points followed by Nowra and Macarthur on 8 points.

The next round of the series is the Macarthur race on July 19. Next weekend's race is a 56km handicap with group 2 providing the marshals.
