Gumeracha, August 23 2003

By Denis Brown

In the A Grade event at Gumeracha Sat. 23rd, Mat Rex continued his good form with a clever win. There had been breakaway attempts all day, particularly from Graham Rootes trying to belt himself into form, for the coming Sun Tour, and did not give up all day. Rex was not going to be tempted into these forays that did not materialize. He kept his finger on the pulse all day. The field was whittled down to 7 with 2 laps to travel, shortly after this Jade Lean lost contact, next to go was John Watters, who battled on valiantly in what was the wettest day we have had this season.

Adrian Laidler made a short lived attempt at sending himself off the front nearing the top of Martins Hill. This may have been better executed had he gone at the bottom of the climb and put more distance between himself and the field. Once they had crested the hill it was easy to collar him.

Once they had turned the corner from Mt Crawford, on the flat road for home, everyone left, had numerous attempts at unloading the survivors. In particular Nick Underwood, who at one stage looked like he might steal it, when he got away about 3 Kms out. He was not going to give up without a fight, did not look around at all, and while his front wheel was in the lead he was winning. Meanwhile Rex was forced to keep the pace up to keep Underwood under control, with a long leadout of about a km. He ran to Underwood, catching him on the line and ensuring second place for him (Underwood ) by the lateness of the catch.
