Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing Week #12Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, August 15, 2003By Paul Craft What an excellent night's racing! The Night kicked off with the two Junior Development Demonstration Races won by Jackson Law and Scott Law. The two brothers than sat back to see if their Dad, Grant Law, could emulate their feats in the big boys races. The feature race of the Night was the Nokian 1.5km Wheelrace for Div 2. The race was extended to 1.5km due to the large field. The Scratchies got to the front early but were unable to maintain their initial fast pace. Geoff Hopkins timed his dash for the line perfectly to take victory from the fading Jeff Smith. Jim Gray rode a gallant race to finish 3rd. Nokian sponsored the Wheelrace and Malcolm (the importer) was at the track once again displaying his products. FNWTR would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Malcolm and Nokian for their support. The hotly contested Win’N’Out Race proved to be one of the cruellest styles of race that you could imagine. In this race the Winner of the first sprint wins the race and pulls out. Only 1 lap later the winner of the second sprint claims 2nd place and pulls out. This continues until the top 5 places are claimed. The Div 1 event was a pearler with Greg McFarlane, Shaun Hopkins and Phil Dixon all going for the first sprint and the overall victory. Greg held Shaun on his hip over the last 100m and took first place by about 5cm. This left Shaun with a 20m lead over the bunch. He was forced to keep his speed to try and claim the next sprint to finish 2nd. Unfortunately for Shaun, David Short burst out of the chasing group to beat the obviously suffering Hopkins on the line, again by a small margin. Would Shaun continue to try and take third? Not a chance. In fact the efforts of his disappointments, had Shaun ride to a fence and proceed to loose the contents of his stomach. Although the majority of the crowd was truly concerned with Shaun’s well being, I know I saw more than one smile on his competitor’s faces. The Italian Pursuits, although they are an organisers nightmare, proved to be another success with the two winning teams adding 5 points to each members pointscore. Standout riders for the night were; Div 1 Greg McFarlane, Div 2 Geoff Hopkins, Div 2b Michael Leach, Div 3 Garry Hines and Women Deena Faulkner. Next week will see our always-entertaining Div 1 Madison as well as our usual endurance and sprint races.
