Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CCAugust 2, 2003The weekend saw a good turn up for the 44km Handicap at the Caesar’s Illawarra Cycle Club. The limit riders had a good time of 20 minutes from the Scratch riders of Guy Mathiske, Peter Jones, Adam Rourke, Robbie Williams and Josh Wall. The 14minute group of Stuart Binns, Dave Russell, Joe Periera and Ben Lohse were riding well but were caught near the turnaround at Calderwood Rd on the first lap by the 16minute group of Garry Doughty, Lionel Covington, Rob Calladine and Frank Tortorici. As usual Tortorici rode hard in the chase. However, despite the work of Tortorici and others, the 16minute group was caught by the block group near the top of Marshall Mount Hall. Austin Pitman, Gavin Drury and Khalid Ali picked the bunch pace up and started the chase for the leading group of riders. The front running groups were working well together to keep away from the chasers, but it was taking it’s toll as one by one riders slipped off the back of the leading group into chase group. Dylan Forbes (Block) was getting itch feet and as he approached Hooker Hill on the second lap out to Calderwood Rd, made a move and broke away from the main chase group to start the chase for the leaders of Dave Morris and Peter Evans (08:00). It was going to be a long chase for Forbes. While Forbes chased well, he was not able to close the gap down to the leaders. In the two up sprint for the line between Morris and Evans it was fought to the line with Morris narrowly winning. Forbes who had been chasing hard finished alone 16 seconds behind with the Peleton competing in a mass sprint a further 19 seconds behind. The mass sprint for fastest time and minor placings was fought out between the Scratch bunch of Rourke, Morris, Williams and Wall, with a few of the block riders such as Jeff Gray throwing his hat into the ring. It was a day for the Morris family as Tim held out the fast finishing Rourke and Williams to take 4th place and fastest time on the day. Morris also set a fastest time for the course of 1:07:13. Next week will see the running of the Nowra round of the Interclub series. As a result no Club racing will be held.
