Situated right in the center of Pennsylvania, the city of Altoona- a working-class community with its roots in the railroad industry - would seem a rather incongruous place for a national-calibre cycling event. Yet, over the past decade, the six-day Tour de 'Toona has evolved into not just one of America's top stage races (in fact, it may become a UCI-sanctioned event in 2001), but also one with a most singular distinction: the men and women compete for the same amount of prize money (about $40,000 each), and do so on the same courses; in comparison to many events, where the women's races are far shorter, the distances raced by the women are the same as the men. However, in the 2000 edition of the Tour de 'Toona, the similarities ended there, as the two races unfolded in distinctly different ways.
