Olympians start with a bang

The six stage Tour de 'Toona in Pennsylvania kicked off with a tight (16 turns) 4 kilometre prologue in the streets of downtown Altoona, with various Olympians dominating the event. In the men, Canada's Gord Fraser (Mercury) showed that he was not just a top sprinter, taking the win from teammate and US Team Pursuit nominee, Derek Bouchard-Hall. In third, a few tenths of a second behind was Saturn's Chris Wherry.

The women's race was won by Elita's Sarah Ulmer, who is also the New Zealand team's main hope for the women's Olympic points/pursuit races. She narrowly beat Saturn's Lyne Bessette (selected for Canada on the road), and Timex's Tracey Gaudry (Australian road selection), the latter who had just negotiated a long flight in from Germany.
