Stage 6 - August 6: Downtown Altoona Criterium

Fraser, Ulmer too good on the final stage

By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent

While Bessette's victory was all but assured, everything else was up for grabs going into the final stage, the Altoona Downtown Criterium. With over a minute's worth of time bonuses available in both races, there was still plenty of opportunity for movement- especially in the men's race, where Navigators' Vassily Davidenko had just seven seconds in hand on sprinter extraordinaire Fraser.

With that in mind, Mercury went on the attack from the gun, quickly blowing the pack apart and leaving a group of 14 in contention- a group that contained Davidenko, Fraser....and four other Mercury riders. While Davidenko and lone teammate Chris Baldwin gave it their best, the Mercurys controlled the action from that point on, setting up Fraser for one time bonus sprint after another till he'd retaken the lead from the Russian, and then sending Scott Moninger ahead to win the stage solo, ahead of Mercury teammates Chris Horner and Fraser, icing their 'Toona cake with a 1-2-3 sweep and two of the top five overall placings.

In the women's criterium, Bessette was secure in the lead, but the battle for second was still a wide-open one between Ulmer and Gaudry. With that in mind, Gaudry went on the attack with temporary teammate Alison Sydor, trying to gain back valuable seconds on the tricky, rain-soaked course. But they were unable to maintain their lead, and were soon brought back; the stage came down to the duo of Bessette and Ulmer, with Ulmer taking the win in a two-up sprint over thirty seconds ahead of the pack, led in by Mayolo. Overall, Bessette finished 3:06 ahead of quadruple stage winner Ulmer, with Gaudry third at 4:30.
