Tour de Toona - NEAltoona, USA, August 1-6, 2000Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 2 - August 2: Johnstown Circuit Road Race, 73 mi/118 kmFraser and Ulmer continueGord Fraser (Mercury) and Sarah Ulmer (Elita) lead the Tour de 'Toona after the first road stage after they recorded victories into Johnstown. Ulmer won her sprint by at least a bike length and a half, and, typical track rider as she is there was no arms in the air finish, just the casual look behind to see where are all the other girls were. [Doug Sheppard notes: Not a photo op]. Fraser however, gave and was given the perfect opportunity in the pack sprint. He capitalized on the tight, slight downhill-right turn approach all-in-200-meters to score a significant victory. Earlier in the race, a break of Mike Sayers and Phil Zajicek (Mercury) set the platform for the team's win, as the others had to chase. However, breaks were hard to come by with most not gaining more than 30 seconds. In another sort of break, a not so fortunate Eric Wohlberg (Shaklee) crashed heavily towards the end of the second of three laps landing on his right wrist. Prognosis - possibly broken wrist and a DNF. The Tour moves onto Hollidaysburg (Thursday), Martinsburg (Friday), Altoona (Saturday, Sunday). Thursday and Friday consist of 60.3 miles (97k) and 80.4 (128k) miles of rolling terrain. Saturday's 95 miles, should play a major role in the reorganizing of the G.C. as it plays into the hands of the climbers, while Sunday's Criterium in downtown Altoona should be a formality.
