Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under news

Stage 3's Man of the Day

Lotto's Glenn d'Hollander was clearly the rider of the day in stage 3. He was in nearly every attack from the beginning of the race, before eventually getting away with Tristan Hoffman after 23 kilometres. Click here to find out more about this Belgian rising star.

McGee's support for junior riders

While several top European squads jockeyed late last year to win the attention and signature of Bradley McGee, the Sydney-born rider was thinking of home and how he could use his appeal to repay those who helped him get to the elite level. To find out how, click here.

A windy day

No matter how pleasant the temperature, how blue the sky, or how calm the sea, wind on the course can make a massive difference to how a bike race is fought and won. Or lost. For JCTDU riders' thoughts on the bike racers' greatest adversary, click here.

Whatever happened to Ludovic Capelle?

One minute the blonde giant with the huge legs was smiling on the stage at the official 2002 Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under welcome function, telling the crowd he was in Australia "to look at beautiful women". The next he was gone. Why? Click here.

Robert Tighello - the wildcard shows his stuff

The KOM champion from last year showed that he is certainly in good form, making the decisive breakaway on stage 2 to move into 9th overall. Click here for his account of the day.

Somarriba's new team

Grand Boucle (Women's Tour de France) champion Joanne Somarriba will lead a new team this year: Deia-Pragma-Colnago. The 12-rider squad was launched Wednesday in Bilboa.

The core of the team will be a 'Basque bloc' of Somarriba herself, Maribel Moreno (best young rider in the 2001 Grande Boucle), Eneritz Iturriaga, Aranzazu Azpiroz, and track world champion Dori Ruano.

These five will be accompanied by a group of riders from the former eastern bloc: Ukrainians Tatiana Stiajkina, Valentina Karpenko and Natalya Kachalka, Russian Ita Kruganovskaja, Pole Anna Skawinska and Natalia Markovnichenko from Bielorussia. Fany Lecourtois of France makes up the twelve.

The new team's main objective is to defend Somarriba's Tour de France crown. On the way it will compete in all the women's World Cup events this year, except for those held in Canada and Australia. The program starts with the women's Milan San Remo on March 13 and takes in Fleche Wallone, the Tour of Switzerland, Tour of Holland and the Giro d'Italia.

The latter will be an important race for the team, providing training for Somarriba, who intends to arrive at the Grande Boucle in the best possible form, and providing a chance for Dori Ruano and Maribel Moreno to move to the forefront.

Hoogerheide awarded a cyclo-cross World Cup in 2003

The Dutch cycling federation (KNWU) has told the organisers of the Hoogerheide cyclo-cross that they will host the 2003 GP van Nederland, which will be part of the cyclo-cross World Cup. Hoogerheide has previously hosted the GP Van der Poel in recognition of the former cyclo-cross star, and the success of this race and perhaps the influence of Van Der Poel has led to hosting the World Cup.

Swedish Cup winner to Powerplace-Bik

Last year's Swedish Cup winner Veronica Andreasson of SšdertŠlje has signed for Dutch/Italian women's team Powerplace-Bik led by Alessandra Capelotto.

Bikesource & Cannondale support Heartland RRC team

Consisting of seven riders mostly from the Kansas and Missouri areas, the Bikesource Cannondale Cycling Team is a new elite team of top local riders, constituted as the Heartland Road Racing Club.

The team will be participating in most area events as well as some national level events. The 2002 roster is full but there is the potential for expansion in the years to come.

The mission of the new team is to provide a relaxed, pressure-free environment for top riders to excel and race. HRRC will be dedicated to helping improve the level of local competition and help encourage the development of youth, collegiate and espoir cycling as part of that mission. Activities to that end will include promoting an event this season, details to be announced.
