Tour of California start list

The 2009 Tour of California. Are you sure that you did not post the start list for the Tour de France? Damn, that is the most elite field I have seen in years. Tours de France not excluded!

Tour of California selection issue

First, for full disclosure I must say I am writing this as a friend and fan of the newly-promoted ProTour rider Ivan Dominguez of Fuji-Servetto (many time podium finisher in the Tours of California, Missouri, and even leader's jersey wearer at the Tour of Georgia). The fact that they didn't get invited to the '09 Tour of California ostensibly because of last year's riders doping exploits is a touch hypocritical.

All riders involved were fired and the team is trying to put their best foot forward. Now let's look at whom is in, I mean come on! They invited, Astana (too many suspects to list), Basso, Floyd, Millar, Sutherland, O'Neill (if CAS hadn't lengthened his suspension) and Rock Racing. I can understand race promoters trying to present a non-doping stance but if you are going to do it, then really do it!

Erik Zabel coverage

Erik Zabel always was my hero - a real gentleman, and a great sprinter. Now his career has ended it's the end of 'Zabel's generation'. He is the best sprinter in cycling history, so, please, write a lot about him - he deserves it.

Zabel's legacy

While I'm a big fan of Zabel's, I personally didn't get the same good vibe from his confession. There was drama swirling around the exposure of all who were part of the doping 'program' at Telecom/T-Mobile. Zabel and all who were involved were soon to be exposed. Zabel simply decided it was best to 'fess up first before the proverbial s*** hit the fan. No real nobility involved, in my opinion.

The Landis dilemma

Several readers have had a go at Mr Landis for not "confessing". One criticised the "soft" interview. All I can say is: what did they expect?

He has maintained his innocence from day one and is unlikely to change his tune. But having followed the legal side fairly carefully it is clear that significant reform is required in the labs and the "courts".

Anyone who is actually innocent seems to have ZERO chance of justice. Doubt it? Then go and read the transcripts and the public statements by Pound and Co.

Landis' comeback

I have never read a letter so completely wrong. Floyd was found guilty. He did his time. He can race again. Who are we to call him an 'unrepentant cheater'. If Floyd was to come out and say "Yes, I cheated" would that change anything? Would USADA say, 'sorry our bad'? Floyd doesn't have to say anything to anybody but his team. It is bad enough that a rider is guilty until proven innocent but now he/she has to come out and say they did it or they are called an ass?

Armstrong and Landis

You guys seem to have a very bad memory regarding David Millar and his "confession". David's teammates said that Millar had used EPO. Millar denied it over and over again, even calling his former teammates "liars and nutters" Only after the police had found the "smoking gun (read: empty vial of EPO)" in his house did he "confess". There is no greatness of character in his admission. To deny it at that point would have made him look even more an idiot.

Regarding Floyd. Do you really think Floyd would have spent all of his money to fight his doping case if he was guilty? Floyd got screwed by the lab. Read the documents regarding the lab, their incompetence and scientific procedure.

Armstrong's contribution to cycling

It appears the following don't count in your list of victories regarding Lance Armstrong's palmares:

Stage victories (and significant overalls) in races like the Dauphine, Fleche Wallonne, Classica San Sebastian, Tour of Luxembourg, Circuit de la Sarthe, Trophee Laigueglia, Midi Libre, Paris Nice, GP Eddy Merckx, Rheinland Pfalz Tour, GP des Nations, La Primavera, Route du Sud, Tour of Switzerland, not to mention US Pro domestic and other races in which we performed well and/or won.

Your LDS (Lance Derangement Syndrome) argument that, "if we look at the records of achievement his name appears seven times on the palmares of the Tour de France and one world championship, but nowhere else" is not only weak, but entirely false.

And like him or not, for someone who's been at it contributing to the sport since turning pro in 1991, he's inspired (and obviously infuriated, from the context of your letter) quite a number of people in and beyond cycling.

Is there media hype? Sure there is. It's everywhere and it's the nature of what they do as media. Feel free to express your opinion, just state the facts regarding an athlete's career achievements.

Armstrong's contribution to cycling #2

Lance Armstrong is a hero and inspiration for some people. He did not save cycling but he was responsible for continuing the popularisation process, especially in the USA, that was started by Greg LeMond, Andy Hampsten and the 7/11 team. Fans have their own heroes for different reasons. Armstrong's history was so dramatic that much of the press he received was from the mainstream and not related to sport at all.

What has saved cycling is the support of the real fans, who continue to tune in and turn up in the face of one PR disaster after another. Let's face it, considering the current economic problems, I don't think the fans or the sponsors will put up with much more illegal activity. The crossroads have been reached.

Armstrong's contribution to cycling #3

Just a quick note to some of you younger fans of cycling. Jonathan Boyer was the first American to really show something in the European peloton and to me he is a true giant of the sport in America. By the way, he was hugely admired in the Netherlands for his never-say-die attitude.

Boyer was fighting it out in the tough races prior to any 7-Eleven team, and he did it the hard way... on a European squad. If you want to know about a real trailblazer in US cycling I suggest you look beyond LeMond and Armstrong.

Armstrong's contribution to cycling #4

Gary - I love Lance's story, his focus and his victories. I love his comeback and the attention and good his done for cancer - I was even lucky enough to see him live in the Tour Down Under.

I too had never heard of Merckx et al two years ago when I picked up my first road bike after watching Lance claim number seven. But the more I learnt about the sport and its rich, European history, the more I agree with Hugh.

Read up on Merckx, he competed in, and won everything - road and track. He was, and is, to Europe what Lance is in the US and the rest of the 'new to cycling' world.

The level of popularity of cycling may be new in the USA and Australia, and growing thanks to Lance, but in Europe cycling was big before Lance started.

This does not discredit what Lance has done, or make him less of a champion. But that fact is whilst he focused soley on the TDF to win it, seven times, Merckx clocked up five consecutive TDF wins (that he competed in), five Giros and one Vuelta on top of many other stage, world and track wins.

Lance is to cycling what LeBron James is to basketball - the best to those that didn't see, or haven't heard of, MJ.

I love Lance, but I would (almost) give up my bike to see Merckx!
