Nice one, Emma!
Popovych was a shadow of his palmares in his time at Silence-Lotto. Eighth while supporting two leaders in the '07 Tour, and then the only time you see him at the front in '08 is for himself on one breakaway and he stuffed that stage up. Every pedal stroke of that effort was not what he was paid for though. Cadel's really had no help at all in his progression through the GC. Horner rated himself above what he did too - hanging at the back of the front group is not reducing the workload of your leader!
I've got to wonder at the continual lack of communication and desire for the Tour in the Lotto setup.
Was Yaroslav unhappy? He had no countrymen with him on the team. Did the Tour team really camp, bond into a unit in training missions and races during the build-up? Wouldn't Cadel and management have known he wasn't gelling or on form prior?
Cadel's doing the Giro. Well he was when I spoke to him a few days ago. He's the team leader, but on the other side of the world while the first training camp of the year is taking place? Hold the camp in Australia if you really want to support your main man, if that's what he is. Weather here encourages better training. Our dollar is pretty cheap now too, so the small team budget stretches pretty darn well.
Silence-Lotto Tour '09 is looking just like any other Belgian attempt at the Tour top spot. Small time in the big leagues. Their signings for the new season are stacked with one day racers; a Kohl de la Farce.
What's happened with the Australian ProTour team? They should have got Cadel out of his contract and got him some serious hill firepower. Having proven GC support dynamos such as O'Grady, Rogers, Gerrans etc giving it their all for their countryman while taking it to CSC and Astana would have been a hair-raising sight!

News coverage of Armstrong
Fully agree with Mark and Savas. If I really wanted to see that much detail about the dubious boss' comeback I have his own site and thousands of his worshippers. What I liked about Cyclingnews for years was your "stick to the facts" attitude - and whilst that itself did not change, the balance of the news presented did. Which I guess may sadly be linked to the analysis of what attracts the web traffic to the site - which is, after all, commercial.
In fact, Armstrong's participation in the Giro lowers my desire to watch it this year. Nothing personal - but I am afraid it will turn the race into spectacle having even less to do with sports than it had over the past few years. At the same time I have no illusion that I am in a minority.

News coverage of Armstrong #2
Regarding Savas Anibal's sentiments last week: "Why do you think that we would like to read everything and anything about Astana and Lance? Why is it that Lance is always top of your daily news page? I am sick and tired to see every single day that Lance is in the news?"
Hmmm... could it be his seven Tour de France victories, the most by anyone in the history of the sport? Could it also be that he is the most recognised rider - by far - world wide? Yeah, you are right: best to relegate anything to do with Armstrong to the back pages.
You don't have to "love" Lance, but perhaps you should consider that his return may be a financial lifeline for a sport on life support. I guess we will see.

In response to the disinterested anti-Lance folks - well, being that it's winter time and this is the biggest news at this time, why wouldn't Cyclingnews write about Lance and Astana repeatedly? I know I'm interested in his return and it's nice to see that he is still training harder than anyone else.
Love him or hate him he's still big news. So get used to it because it's just going to continue throughout 2009.

News coverage of Armstrong #4
In response to Mark Farmer's (and others) letters regarding the extreme exposure of Lance Armstrong, I have to say I agree with all of you. Cycling fans had to put up with seven years of seemingly every second photograph sporting him pulling his arrogant attitude along with the "I'm some mean S.O.B." face and, all through the Tour having Liggett and Sherman breathlessly recount his each and every move, if some other rider attacked, it was a la Armstrong, or that cyclist time trials just like him... Let it go will you!
I have nothing against the guy, though he is totally abrasive guy and I feel his wins were under dubious circumstances, but ultimately he is a professional sportsman. It means getting the maximum publicity for himself and his business interests, and this thing about cancer, though worthy, fuels these interests too. He can't really lose in his quest for ink, which somewhere along the way, earns somebody money. That's the way it works, you lot probably get something out of it too, which is fine, but if there is that many people out there who really give that much of a rat's about Lance, put it all on another page and put a link on your website.
To quite a few people, the thought of another summer of him, in the Giro, the Tour and who knows what ever he says he might race is off-putting. The guy is old news, he and Bruyneel are working the press and pushing the new up and coming riders off to one side in their drive for publicity. Those past three years were so nice; new riders, exciting racing and now I face the prospect of not going to Adelaide for the Tour Down Under for my holidays, giving the Tour a miss on the telly (sorry SBS) and probably spending far less time on this still excellent website.

In response to Savas and Mark's letter's, I wholeheartedly agree. Lance this, Lance that. I'm bored with him already and he hasn't even ridden his bike in anger yet. No doubt he will be equally as exciting as the last time we were treated to seeing him in competition.
Not only do we have blanket coverage of LA reported on Cyclingnews.com, we now have to put up with, in the UK at least, both Procycling AND Cycle Sport running sycophantic drivel about him in their latest print runs. Throw in The Comic with its weekly LA diary and we have reached saturation level.
Would so-called editors please show some imagination.

If you don't want to hear about Armstrong in the near future, you might want to find a cave or go on a long trip outside of modern civilisation. Heaven forbid a cycling publication report on the racing, training, etc. of a returning 37-year-old bike racer, cancer surviver/cancer philanthropist, who happens to be a seven-time Tour de France champ, and joins a team which includes the current best grand tour racer in the world, whom he intends to beat to Paris. Yep, boring stuff.

Old School Rules
On a recent Sunday morning ride, it happened again. A young rider passed me on the right, which is the wrong side here in America and didn't say a word. Not 'on your right', not good day, nothing. This sort of thing has been happening with increasing frequency and I'd had enough. I caught him said hello. He was actually a decent young man who just seemed a bit lacking in the normal social graces but also what I consider basic bike etiquette.
I asked a young racer and the older bike mechanic at my local bike shop what this was about. The racer said he'd read in a reputable cycling magazine that keeping one's race day game face on at all times, on all rides, was good discpline for the aspiring racer. Horse pucky I say, so I penned the following:

Cycle Sport's Lance Armstrong interview
So Lance distrusts the media? After reading Ed Pickering's interview with Lance in Cycle Sport, I can see why. What a bunch of opinionated junk. It's all about Ed and Ed's opinion and how Ed might have had his feelings hurt because Lance doesn't cater to the media. And, sniff, did you see how he looked at me. 'Mom! Lance is looking at me!' And then Lionel Birnie's "I hope not" while discussing if Lance will win in '09...
Ed, you flew all the way to Austin, got a nice slot in Lance's schedule and your 'interview' has more of your words than his. I didn't learn a thing about Lance I didn't already know. You didn't ask one of the 20 questions I would have asked him, nothing much about training, his personal life, LiveStrong, the past three years, his friends, his family, his adventures, how his body feels, his bikes, his teammates, other racers, Bush. And if you did, it was all in a leading manner that left no room for discussion. Just go back over and over the same crap you've gone over and over before. Geez, what a waste of an opportunity. Bet you don't get a second and you'll feel so vindicated.
Lance, if you're reading this, let me come interview you and I'll write it up for Cyclingnews. Even though I'm not a media type, I'll try to be informative and neutral and provide lots of facts and insight for my readers to make up their own mind. I'm sure it's harder than it looks, but I'll actually try to be a credit to the human race.
P.S. The pictures were pretty good. At least the photographer understands his job.

Cadel Evans
Does this guy ever stop whining? Does he think more teammates are going to change the fact that he can't accelerate? Did he ever stop to think that maybe he just doesn't have it to win the Tour? Maybe that is why Lotto won't pay to build a team around him. Maybe that is why no one else is willing to do so either, and frankly the fact that Evans has been bitching for years but hasn't moved on makes me think Evans himself knows it too.
You never hear Leipheimer complain. Same boat. Good solid guy, always going to be there in the end, but invariably he is going to watch the little punchy guys dance on the peddles as they move on up the road. He just doesn't try to blame his own inability on someone else.

I was truly moved by Weston K. Reid's description of Michael Ball as a "coffee shop sweetie" and all-round great person. While I have never sipped a latte, dunked biscotti or performed any other California-esque rituals with Mr. Fashionista I have read a bit of the public domain news which sadly casts Weston K's idol in a different light. But hey! Don't take my word for it. Use your favourite search engine using a number of key words and you'll end up with a more 'balanced' picture of the "Future of American Cycling".

Viagra - a doping product?
Viagra - a doping product? Apparently not, at least in regards to cycling. While all the witty hypotheses regarding the performance "enhancements" of taking Viagra are probably intended for entertainment purposes only, in truth they aren't far from the mark.
I suspect that some endurance athletes are taking Viagra in the hope that it will dilate their arteries, allowing more blood to flow to their muscles. More blood = more oxygen = better performance, right? However, Viagra isn't going to dilate any blood vessels in your leg muscles, or anywhere else other than its intended target. To clarify why it won't, first I should explain the way it works:
(Disclaimer: I'm not a medical professional. To those who are, please correct any inaccuracies you find below.)
-When aroused, the brain sends a signal to certain nerves in the "male anatomy"
that cause the body to produce Nitric Oxide.
-This Nitric Oxide causes certain enzymes to start producing Cyclic Guanosine
Monophosphate (cGMP).
-cGMP causes the smooth muscle cells in the artery walls to relax, allowing
more blood to flow into the "male anatomy", which results in an erection.
-There is a second enzyme also present, Phosphodiesterase (PDE), that breaks
the cGMP back down, preventing an uncontrollable reaction.
-All of this occurs only when the brain sends the proper signal, ie "I'm aroused".
-One of the most common reasons for erectile dysfunction is that the body is
not producing enough cGMP. One way to counteract this is to increase the amount
of cGMP in the blood by preventing the PDE from breaking it down. That is what
Viagra does, it effectively blocks the PDE from doing its job, allowing cGMP
to accumulate and do its job.
-Viagra is flushed out of the body in about four hours, making this a temporary
effect.
Now, you might be thinking that Viagra sounds like the perfect way to increase blood flow to ALL of your body, but here's the kicker:
There are eleven types of PDE in the body, each effective in different areas. In the case of the "male anatomy", PDE5 is the specific type of PDE that works as described above. Viagra ONLY blocks PDE5, and has no effect on any other vascular muscle cells, including those in the legs, lungs, and heart. In other words, it has no performance-enhancing effect in endurance sports.
Frankly, I'm astonished that no one at WADA knows this. In theory, one could figure out the necessary chemical needed to block whatever form of PDE that is used to control the dilation of the blood vessels in the muscles used in endurance sports, but whatever it is it wouldn't be Sildenafil Citrate, aka Viagra. It looks like WADA is barking up the wrong tree.

So the UCI is going to test for Viagra as a doping product. Recommended UCI procedure could be - line the Viagra suspects up on the finish podium, get one of the delightful Tour of Italy podium girls to present some flowers, wait 30 seconds, you spot the doper. Beats the need for all that B sample nonsense.
