CA awards misses national series

I would like to express my disappointment at Cycling Australia's lack of recognition for the Australian National Road Series. FRF Couriers has invested a substantial amount of money into the NRS for 2007, nurtured a group of young and aspiring riders and subsequently the FRF Couriers/NSWIS Continental team won the team series. Unfortunately, it seems our team has received no recognition from Cycling Australia for doing so.

It's a great pleasure to see Cycling Australia award the Australian stars of the sport, however, for those of us supporting the aspiring riders it would be nice to see their efforts recognised.

Armstrong on Landis

Having kept up with this case, I didn't read about a single piece of evidence against Landis which was not tainted. How can you get prepondence of the evidence when not a single piece of evidence can be relied on?

Vinokourov's sentence

Hi there cyclingnews readers around the globe!

It's sad too see the story of Alexander Vinokourov and especially the sentence because he should get a 2 year and nothing else from the Kazakhstan federation everything else is out of order. It does not matter that the guy is leaving his career as a cyclist. For god sake we are here talking about blood doping and that is a two year ban everywhere but not in Kazakhstan as it seems. I am very surprised that the UCI has not at least as far as I know, reacted strongly to this sentence as it is clearly against the rules.

And the talk in an article recently on cycling about that cyclists from Kazakhstan are not accepted in the pro peloton is just a lot of bs. The stories of Kaschechkin and Vinokourov have until recently proved otherwise, before they were caught they were certainly accepted among us many fans. What certain team managers thought is nothing that I know of. Go ahead Alexander write your memoirs and admit what you did as so many others seem to do in these days and if you have proof please tell us about as many cheaters as you like. But do it only if you say you are guilty yourself.

Vinokourov

I think maybe Vinokourov needs a speech writer.

I am not guilty. And besides, tennis and football players do it all the time, and no one is ever punished. I will prove my innocence. (This is not a quote, but rather the message Vino sent out to the public.)

Very unsound reasoning. He should have mentioned American baseball players. However, talking about guilty people only implies that if everyone does it, then it is acceptable for me to use it also.

There must be more positive things to talk about. I would like to see some letters showing support for our sponsors. What products have you purchased due to one's sponsoring cycling?

Cadel Evans - returns to training

"Evans starts training for '08 Tour"

Where is the news? Where is the story?

A report/article from an Aussie journalist regarding an Aussie is convenient but at least make a news story out of it. If someone wants to make an interesting article, especially regarding a countryman, they should begin with a very different headline in December.

Evans late to start in training for '08 Tour.

Get in there, turn the screws! If you want your fellow countryman to represent the first Tour victory, get on his back and ask WHY he didn't start training the day after the Tour '07?

By December Cadel should know the '08 course and already have ridden some of the climbs. That, my friend, is how to win the Tour. Don't just follow, Cadel...LEAD! If you expect to win, and it is safe to assume this is the goal, then you can stop worrying about what others write, say, or whether you should be "superhuman". Know in your mind that you have trained harder & smarter than any other rider, after all, you are not the only one riding/training right now.

You want to be the best, then train more than anyone because when you are in the final 5km of the penultimate climb(s) in '08, you will know in YOUR mind that "there 'aint nobody out here but me that is going to win this thing", right before you dust the three favourites following your wheel.

Where is the story? Give us something to read, substance perhaps? Make something up, write about why Cadel is better than anyone else, take a stand!

I guarantee the '07 winner and the following top ten, aside from Cadel, has started thinking about '08 as soon as the bubbly settled in July. I guarantee Alberto Contador has already been to France, as busy as his schedule has been with Tour victor duties, and has ridden a few climbs. In fact, I personally spoke with him in September at the Tour of Missouri and he couldn't give specifics but he was on his way. (I worked the event).

Here is a story, "Evans training schedule: August - July 1". This would give readership something to think about, enjoy. Equally, it would commit Cadel to paper. Once you write it down, it becomes reality. I am cheering on the best riders, whomever, wherever they are from.

Cadel already lost Tour '08 would be my prediction, because anything less than number 1 would be a loss at this point. Don't follow, LEAD! The same holds true for fellow countryman journalists. Entice us, dazzle us, prove to us why the time is NOW for Australia.

Let's keep it simply Cyclingnews. Nothing before and nothing after.

Mayo's B sample to get B test

As I predicted in my letter of 30 November, we hear today (20 December) the announcement that Iban Mayo's B sample test conducted in the discredited French lab is of course - you guessed it - 'positive'. I sincerely hope that this case goes to CAS as the whole process is a farce and totally loaded against the sportsman. The credibility of this lab is pretty much nil outside of the UCI clique. Even if its processes were bona fide it cannot be a reasonable or safe process for a lab which conducted the A test to also conduct a B test.

In my professional role (nothing to do with cycling) investigations or any disciplinary actions are required to be beyond question and fair and reasonable. For example you would never have an investigating officer appointed who has a vested interest in a particular result as the French lab so obviously does. The current system surely breaches the Human Right Convention at least in terms of the right to a fair trial. A fair process is implicit in that. If Mayo is guilty then this is not the case to sanction him and damages the reputation and credibility of the process, adding to mistrust and the disaffection with pro-cycling we see from sponsors and broadcasters. Get a grip Gripper the UCI is acting like a banana republic - or perhaps as it's based in Switzerland it's simply cuckoo and full of holes!
