Vande Velde - my new homeboy

Great article on Christian Vande Velde. In a peloton full of EPO-chuggers, crazy euros and wannabe prima donnas, it's cool to see that a guy like Christian has his priorities right: keeping it reals with the family situation and a good ol' fashioned "Gangsta Rap Colouring Book".

Seriously, I do think it's interesting to see that his garage kinda looks like mine (minus the Corvette - darn) and that he wears the same goofy-ass clothes as me when the snow flies. And how 'bout that - instead of toodling around Palma de Mallorca or the Canary Islands with the euros, homeboy is training at home in Chicago - in winter.

This guy's OG 24/7. And you're right Christian, riding in Nebraska does kinda suck, but we ride here anyway. It's home after all. Peace.

Michael Ball - a true amateur

In reading the recently-posted interview with Michael Ball, I was struck by a thought that had previously crossed my mind on several occasions over the last two years.

As Rock Racing has made its splash, regardless of Ball's skill (or lack thereof) in subcontracting designs and/or designers, further subcontracting cut and sew shops throughout Asia and developing work, and finally subcontracting independent retailers to throw his wares on the quickly deflating, credit card-fuelled consumer markets in the spoiled consumer economies, he has simply no skill when pushing his way into the truly professional ranks of global cycling

The list of half-truths and unfulfilled commitments that lay in Rock Racing's wake are mounting beyond the point of patience. Indeed, Ball would do well to note that in common law legal theory, a contract is not valid simply because both parties have inked the page but rather becomes valid when there is "a meeting of the minds".

It is nice, one supposes, that Tyler Hamilton was able to whisk away a national championship jersey (in a national ride that lacked a lot of national players, per the Olympic schedule as well as the normal effects of a long season in Europe). At the end of the day, Ball would do well to admit that he can't continually flap his arms about, make noise here and there, and then expect world class riders - with real world class palmares - to eat his feed.

These are men, after all, that have actually paid in real sweat and strain for their accomplishments, and Mr Michael will soon find, if he has not already, that big marketing ploys and false promises might work for a time in high street retail, but they will not stand in hard-cobble cycling, paved by the likes of true champions

Lance's anti-doping programme?

Well, it looks like in a few short months the highly-motivated and hyper-efficient Lance has got almost everything together: a team, his training, a media strategy, a race programme, even a nice new bike (with fancy custom-made pedals).

But what about the much-trumpeted independent anti-doping programme? Surely that should have been up and running well before the racing started, but it seems a long time since I heard anything about it.

Armstrong? Hold on there a minute!

Professional cycling has had great coverage and has rapidly increased over the 50-plus years I have been following it and almost all of this without the likes of Lance Armstrong. Furthermore, when all is said and done, if we look at the records of achievement his name appears seven times on the palmares of the Tour de France and one world championship, but nowhere else.

He remains essentially a one-race cyclist. Therefore, the incredibly over-exaggerated claims that he has somehow saved cycling is pure unadulterated media-generated hyperbole. Merckx, Hinault, Anquetil, Indurain, Coppi, Bartoli, Rominger and so on have done much more for cycling's long term image than one American who has an overblown ego and who profits from his public image as a cancer crusader.

While he may well stimulate further interest in cycling, much of this is often idle curiosity by people who frequently have little knowledge of cycling and its wider history. For those of us who love cycling with ardour, Armstrong is a mere speck in its overall heritage. Ultimately, what he has achieved in cycling has been characteristically more for himself than for the sport and its numerous committed supporters.

Cycling is far greater than anything that he is alleged to have done for it.

Piepoli's 'mistake'

I have no wish to exonerate Piepoli. He is by his own recognition a cheater (Gazzetta dello Sport Janary 7, 2009: "l'ho rubata" - I stole it). "Sbagliare", however, can easily connote willful error in Italian, as in to be wrong. That definition extends to gross moral error (the common phrase "ho sbagliato di grosso"). The original text of Piepoli's comments, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport: "sono un uomo che ha sbagliato." In Italian, that means "I am a man who has erred." I would urge readers to be wary of what is lost in translation.

Added perspective on Aussie elite

Having friends live 10km from the start/finish of the Australian national championship course was too good an opportunity to miss. I thought I'd ride around the course to get a greater appreciation of how good the pro's are.

After the women had finished I rode in and had a turn. I was glad I had plenty of good excuses for a poor performance - sore legs, a bit of Christmas pudding, not much sleep, wind blowing me about. In the end a (just) respectable time for a hack... 20 minutes to get around for just one lap! It's a nasty circuit for mortals.

So with that I was primed for watching the event. What an awesome display for the leading trio to average 32 percent faster for 16 times the distance. I don't think a $10,000 bike is going to help.

Looking forward to next year...hopefully with some jumbo screens

Painted on abs

Since cyclists aren't particularly known for their chiseled abs, it's nice that Team Columbia has painted them onto their new team jerseys. I notice the women's "abs" are slightly different than the men's. Though the "pecs" are quite similar. Hmmm... What does that imply?

Seriously, this has got to be one of the most goofy uniform designs ever. It makes one nostalgic for zebra stripes and jelly beans.

Warm Spain?

"Kloden training in warm Spain" said your news of Jan 10th. I guess you jumped to the conclusion: it's Spain, so it must be warm.

Right? Wrong!

The northern two thirds of the country are under deep snow, vehicles must have chains on the tyres for all mountain passes, Madrid airport has delays of 24 hours or more because the snowploughs can't keep the runways clear. The "warmest" part of Spain is the south coast where (at the moment of writing, 9am) the temperature is 2.5C (about 36F) with a forecast high of 9C (48F) with strong gusts of very cold wind.

Is Kloden somewhere on the coast? I admit that above freezing is relatively "warm" on most of the Mediterranean coastal strip. Just a couple of miles inland, you're into the mountains where the snow level is about 500 metres (1,600 feet.)

OK, so it's warmer than Switzerland, but if Kloden likes skiing, the Sierra Nevada (an hour's drive inland from the Granada coast) has 90km of powder snow piste.

What about the islands? I read that some Majorca training camps were restricted to indoor training due to vile weather. So don't, please, assume that Spain is always synonymous with warm sunshine!
