Piepoli's 'mistake'

I think Chuan is mistaking "mistake" with "Accident". Dictionary.com defines 'Mistake' as: an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc. A mistake can be a conscious action.

I agree with the spirit of his letter - an apology should never be a free ticket out. But a rider can legitimately say that in hindsight it was obviously a mistake to take drugs. That doping was an error in action caused by poor reasoning (benefit vs. cost), carelessness (I just wanted to win), and insufficient knowledge (I didn't know I'd get caught)

Piepoli's 'mistake' #2

I agree with Chaun's comments.

I tried to dope once, there was a big contract at stake and I didn't have the adequate preparation to perform in a particular race. I decided that I would try and get some dope (whatever would work, I didn't have a clue about any specific products.) to help me perform well in this race and then I'd get the contract and I could go back to the normal training etc...

Thankfully I wasn't able to get my hands on anything as I probably would've damaged my health in some way, but if I had it would have been no mistake. It was a calculated conscious decision. Sure it would've been a bad decision, but no mistake.

News coverage of Armstrong

The sport of cycling has been around for 100 odd years. Everything Lance took part in already existed, thanks to the Europeans... I agree he has made a huge difference in the US road scene, and good on him for that. But please remember cycling is bigger than one man. And certainly one country.

For the record I am a fan of the guy and all the media attention he has generated globally. Just sick of the yanks banging on about him and how he is the saviour of cycling, blah blah blah... I like may others was riding before him, when he retired I kept cycling, and when he retires again.. guess what I'll still be riding.

In the meantime his return makes for interesting reading and good luck to the guy.

In response to Regis Chapman's letter:

"The reason why your co-workers, aunts, uncles and grandparents know cycling is largely thanks to him and all his wins and his cancer comeback. Many of the juniors that fill your clubs, and the masters who have come to the sport in their later years have done that because of Lance."

Sorry to burst your bubble but here in the UK we managed to see cycling 'pre Lance' perfectly. Channel 4 in Britain blazed the trail since the mid 80's with the Tour, uninterrupted. I'm sure the continental cousins will also say the same. Cycling would have been on Eurosport because it's a national sport across the continent irrespective of Lance. Indeed races like Flanders have to be shown on free to air TV in some countries precisely because they are part of the fabric of national life.

Lance is a great athlete and his story is compelling; however, he hasn't raced yet so let's reserve judgement on his comeback until it matters and give all the other Classics riders their due in the meantime. Personally I think this will backfire, Armstrong has nothing to gain and everything to lose both on a sporting front but also in blocking the future of his team in Contador. Even if the comeback is successful on some level he can only keep going for so long.

I take some exception to this point, if it were not Lance then it would have been someone else, improved communication technology is largely the reason why new exposure has been given to the sport, Satellite feeds did not exist even 10 years ago as they do now. And as far as "co-workers, aunts, uncles and grandparents knowing cycling because of Lance", give me a break, they don't know cycling Regis, they only know enough to wonder why Lance doesn't win every stage or just ride away from the start.

Regis has many valid points, but don't credit Lance for legitimising the sport in Australia. Phil Anderson deserves that honour in Australia. His efforts and results inspired many young Australian riders. McEwen and O'Grady have also done their fair share in more recent times. I am sure if you asked most boys and girls on the streets of Australia who their cycling heroes are, they would be saying Robbie and Stuey, not Lance.

News coverage of Armstrong #5

It looks like the overwhelming majority of readers leaping to Lance's defence seem to reside in the US of A.

Perhaps in the US you can thank Lance for what he has done for the sport in your country, but the rest of the world isn't so hot on Lance. The sport of cycling globally has existed long before Lance and should be allowed to continue to do so without him. He hasn't given anything back to the sport - not even a line of bike frames. He can't even ghost write a book about the sport - only about himself.

Great American cyclists such as Lemond and Hampsten respected the sport and it's culture, however Lance acts as though he's bigger than cycling and it's culture, and the unnecessary media coverage is doing nothing other than bolstering that image. Note to editors: extensive coverage favouring one rider who is really just riding his bike around at the moment makes for bad copy. I mean, if we're already at this level of reporting on this man, how many more webpages are you going to need when he actually starts racing?

There are other cyclists leaving the sport, returning to the sport and developing within the sport but we can't get any news on them because of the Lance circus hogging the spotlight. So the argument that we shouldn't read articles on Lance if we don't like him is redundant - that's all the reportage there is to read!

The reason why my fellow countrymen know anything about the sport is because of the media coverage of CYCLING, not Lance. Decades ago when talking about the topic of cycling my friends and relatives (including my grandmother) would discuss Big Mig, Greg Lemond and Phil Anderson.

We would be able to watch cycling on TV regardless of whether there was an English speaking rider in the peloton or not - but maybe the media in some countries is better at reporting world news than in others. Unfortunately now on the topic of cycling we're discussing Lance, not the heroic efforts of the racing.

So congratulations to Lance for raising his own profile in the US and becoming a rich man doing so, but cycling was only used as the vehicle to reach that end. So can we please move on and talk about someone newsworthy?

Rock Racing

I'm not surprised at the demise of Rock Racing. His involvement with racing was about 'bling' and feeding his ego. Now that were effected by economic challenges, "were here to stay" appears to be conditional and now Mr. Ball should be stating, "were out of here". he was an embarrassment to the racing circuit to begin with, in fact its not a race circuit with Mr. Ball but a circus.

I feel for those who are employed by Mr. Ball, he should have written a better business plan

Love your site, I'm on it everyday. Never lose your sense of humour, that's the best part. Naturally I'm most appreciative for any coverage of Canadian riders and events, although we haven't had much to cheer about lately on the road since Steve Bauer retired. Vuelta a Tachira gets my vote for best podium girls! Good luck with your new look, you keep improving.

The new look

I think it would almost be more bearable if you put the ads on top and we had to scroll down to the columns. As they are, the news and features columns seem like an afterthought and not the main focus of the page. I find it annoying. It used to lok like a newspaper. Now it looks like a huge advert page. Do something, please! Put the ads in the middle.

For the first time since I started visiting your site in 2003 I actually almost didn't want to go there! For the first time since I discovered Velonews, Cyclingnews, AS Ciclismo, Todociclismo and the Eurosport cycling pages I was tempted to go to the Eurosport FIRST! And that's a first for me... Yuck! Please, change it. Make the print the focal point again, please! (Yeah, I'm childish and immature and obsessed. I know).
