Viagra - a doping product?
Piepoli's 'mistake'
Is it an artefact of translation, or is it cycling's version of management-speak?
Or is it simply the cheat's way of continuing to deny responsibility - to keep
on living the lie?
I'm referring, of course, to how dopers from all sports continue to talk about
making "mistakes" ["Piepoli admits mistake", December 25]. Making a decision
to cheat is not a mistake! By definition, mistakes are inadvertent. You don't
inadvertently inject EPO or accidentally glue a testosterone patch to your scrotum.
How about making the eventual lifting of a doping suspension dependent upon
the cheat never, ever saying they made a "mistake"? At the very least, perhaps
the media, beginning with Cyclingnews, could take a stand and apply sceptical
or sarcastic quotation marks every time a cheat is quoted talking about their
"mistake".

News coverage of Armstrong
Well, let's have a reality check here...
My apologies to all you Lance complainers, but everyone who rides a bike needs
to kiss the butt of Lance Armstrong. Seriously. Hey, I agree more than most
with what seems to be wrong with him and his personality and I have been to
dinners in his honour where he left MANY people standing awaiting an autograph
with nothing. OK, we get it.
I say that you should ALL be thankful to Lance for bringing more money and
awareness than 10 classy Felice Gimondis or scandalous Freddy Maerten's could
have ever done. I know Cyclingnews and VeloNews (or insert your favourite cycling
site here) are what they are today because of him. I can watch cycling on TV
almost anywhere in the US now because of him, and I am sure it's this way in
other English speaking nations too. You can't beat his story!
Have some perspective. Yeah, OK, Greg was the first American to win and opened
the door, Andy Hampsten was also blazing the trail, nevermind Mike Neel and
Jim Ochowicz, etc, but it's ALL Lance since then.
The reason why your co-workers, aunts, uncles and grandparents know cycling
is largely thanks to him and all his wins and his cancer comeback. Many of the
juniors that fill your clubs, and the masters who have come to the sport in
their later years have done that because of Lance.
Sure, if you're in Australia, it's helped that they had a great national program
and received world attention through Olympic medals, but that would be been
lessened if Lance hadn't been there legitimising the sport like no one before
him. Like Greg LeMond before him, he's raised the level of the sport through
his story, his ability and the force of his personality. You need all three
and I for one welcome him back with open arms, despite his many and clear faults.

News coverage of Armstrong #2
If you don't like the 'Lance' articles you could try not reading them. Cyclingnews
generally does a good job reporting even obscure happenings all over the globe.
They also have a responsibility to cover the events concerning high profile
riders such as Armstrong. Although hard to prove, the former does not appear
to be negatively impacted by the latter. I am not a gushing Armstrong fanatic,
I see the good and the bad and accept both.
I am interested in this comeback and not in the way a casual observer might.
His comeback sets off a chain of events impacting the financing, popularity,
and media coverage of the entire sport but is often overstated. The most interesting
aspects to me are the internal conflicts no one inside of Astana is willing
to confront publicly but we know are there. It is certainly newsworthy and if
you don't think watching that soap opera unfold is interesting, you are unimaginative.

News coverage of Armstrong #3
Lance Armstrong is the ONLY cyclist to have achieved international recognition
and interest outside of cycling circles, that's why there's so much much media
coverage.
I'm stunned by the 'why so much Lance coverage' question being repeated over
and over... Just because you (the anti-Lance brigade) don't want to hear about
him is no reason not to cover his come back.
There are many people who do want to hear about him; those who have been inspired
by him and his career outnumber those who haven't. If you don't like it, tough!

News coverage of Armstrong #4
People can write as much negative opinion on the return of Armstrong as they
want, but here is the plain and simple truth: They are writing about him. So
good or bad, he is making the news and people's thoughts. I just sit back and
laugh at how upset some people are about his return. Why isn't anyone writing
about the return of Kirsipuu or more about Rock Racing hiring more riders than
it can support? Love him or hate him, Armstrong makes news and we the people
read about him.
As for the Tour Down Under, I would be surprised if he won. The race is too
flat for Lance. The positive is that it is getting media coverage and that means
dollars getting pumped into the failing global economy. If it takes Lance coming
back, or any other star (i.e. Basso), let it be and let's use them as cycling's
'stimulus package' as well as cancer's 'stimulus package'.

Tinkov on his way out
It is extremely unfortunate to hear that Oleg Tinkov has quit Katusha. Why
a team would want to alienate someone with a strong passion and commitment to
developing pro cycling, who also happens to have money - is beyond me. As Tinkov
said in the interview, "it is more about the Eastern Bloc cyclists not having
the money or the culture;" cycling needs more people like Oleg Tinkov, people
trying to stretch the boundaries of cycling beyond Western Europe.

Cadel Evans
I kind of agree with Steve
Adelman and as a lot of people have already stated, I believe that last
year should have been Cadel's year. Everyone was picking him to win, including
other team's directors, journalists and ex-pro riders. No one mentioned Sastre.
We will never know how much difference Evan's fall made to the overall result.
It is different for Leipheimer as he is not the designated team leader. Funny
thing is, when he rides defensively no one says anything. Evan's critics are
a bit one eyed in that regard. Leipheimer cannot make too many demands but it's
true, he does seem to be a good sportman and takes the rough with the smooth.
Evans must be frustrated, especially with the Kohl fiasco after finally getting
what he wanted. Cadel never stops trying but this year's race, on paper, looks
even harder. Lotto has bought well but is obviously hoping that Dekker, Van
Den Broek and Lloyd can improve, plus Grabsch is very strong. Good luck to all
!

Cadel Evans #2
In response to Mr Adelman's
letter:
If you read the few quotes from Cadel you'll see he is merely stating facts...
and generally this has been the case in the past. If you had watched the last
few tours you would have, on every major mountain stage, seen Cadel alone at
the end of the stage and set against teams with two, three or even four remaining
riders at the front. With that many adversaries any explosive move will be countered
quickly by the others, even if it means sacrificing a team member.
You would also have noticed riders with support taking turns at making a break
- Cadel being forced to slowly accelerate in order to limit his losses and save
as much energy as possible. It would have made no tactical sense at all in either
of the last two Tours to make a big attacking move without assured support for
the next day... something that no GC contender has done (except perhaps the
great Mr Merckx).
Can't accelerate? How about the Giro in 2002, when he went so hard he slaughtered
everyone and got the pink (yeah he bonked the next day but he was young)? Or
more recently at the Coppi Bartali where he sprinted up the final climb with
a huge spurt of speed to win. Even his performances in the early season one
day races have shown him at the head of the pack on a number of occasions. Just
because he chooses to ride a tactical race and has to think about the next day
when riding GC doesn't mean he can't accelerate.
Does Leipheimer complain? No, but then he has never been trying for GC in a
three-week tour with the support of a couple of one-day riders and a few reasonable
climbers who aren't at their best. Horner was probably the only good domestique
that Evans has ever had when the road goes up and he was no Leipheimer/Schleck/Voigt.
And lastly, does Evans have it in him to win a Tour? Possibly, but I don't
think he ever will, because cycling rarely rewards individual talent unless
it is part of a talented team. Just ask Mr Armstrong. Or better yet, Carlos
Sastre - he is a very similar rider to Cadel, a good talent but with largely
unrealised potential, then his team started working for him alone and suddenly
he is in Paris wearing yellow.

Cadel Evans #3
In relation to Steve
Adelman's letter; Cadel has been eighth, fourth and second twice in the
last two years, every time without the assistance of a team of capable climbers,
as all the recent winners have had.
Notwithstanding, in the 2008 Tour a fall in the first week that would have
seen most riders quit, and then having to resist the constant attacking by team
CSC, and a next-to-useless Popovych lagging way down in the peloton. After all
the final time in 2008 difference was only 58 seconds, and most likely without
the fall and even a modicum of assistance on the mountain days we would have
had a different winner, although I suppose some people would still have been
complaining that he didn't attack enough to be a worthy winner.
Good grief, don't you understand what it takes to be in the last ten in the
Tour de France four years running, especially without four guys sitting on the
front dragging you up the cols. I say, 'Cadel, you are a bloody hero', and I'm
an ex-pat biker Pom living in Australia.

Chicago Olympics road race
Regarding the story on the changes to the Chicago Olympic bid. Moving the road
race out of the Chicago area will only improve the race. In 1996, the Atlanta
Olympic planners could have used the same roads and climbs that became classic
in the Tour of Georgia such as Brasstown Bald. Instead they opted for a route
with one hill that kept the pack close together until the final mile or so.
I'm sure a road race in Wisconsin will attract more spectators than the edition
in China.

Viagra - a doping product?
In the case of Rich Nickla's
letter, I suggest the writer read more on pulmonary blood flow in exercise.
I also suggest he read up on the effects of sildenafil on the pulmonary circulation.
He is obviously unaware of its effect on pulmonary circulation.
With even a little research on the drug, he would have discovered that sildenafil
has significant effects on pulmonary circulation and that is why it is used
to treat pulmonary hypertension. Whether these effects on pulmonary circulation
lead to significant improvements in exercise capacity at sea level (in athletes
with normal pulmonary circulation) is still being investigated, but it is plausible.

Viagra - a doping product?
I am a medical professional but that does not mean that my opinion resolves
the issue if viagra (seldenafil) would enhance athletic performance. The data
is not yet available. However, Rich
Nickla is not correct in his letter.
Viagra dilates the blood vessels in the lungs as there is some overlap in the
various PDE receptors. It is used to treat patients with pulmonary hypertension.
In this application it is marketed under another name but is still the same
drug (sildenafil).
Sildenafil has not been thoroughly evaluated as a performance enhancing drug,
however, it could increase pulmonary blood flow by decreasing the trans-pulmonary
gradient. This is a complex question as elite athletes an already move a lot
of blood through the pulmonary circulation.

Viagra - a doping product?
Rich, Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra) is also used to treat Pulmonary Arterial
Hypertension. As I understand it, decreasing smooth muscle tone in the pulmonary
arteries means a decrease in the afterload of the right ventricle. In turn,
this means that for a given heart rate there's a greater cardiac output from
the right side of the heart. The left ventricle experiences an increase in preload
leading to an increase in end diastolic volume.
Without a change in contractility, the ejection fraction remains the same but
the stroke volume goes up. In this way the left ventricle matches the output
of the right ventricle, and the cardiac output increases. More blood oxygenated,
more oxygen to the muscles.
The only odd thing is that in healthy people, the pulmonary arteries are fully
dilated. I've read in the Journal of Applied Physiology that it helps at altitude,
though.
