Danny Clark - an inspiration
Just read your story on Danny
Clark and the Bernie Wheelrace from 30 years ago. It was the same scenario
in Bendigo a couple of years before. I have seen a lot of races in my life,
even been in them, but Danny's effort to win in Bendigo that night was etched
in a young boy's mind forever. Just like in Burnie, in Bendigo Danny was in
a hopeless position at the bell but reeled them all in to win. Riders like Danny
Clark are what inspire young riders to forge on, I know, first hand!

Legal standards and cycling
Several people writing to Cyclingnews have correctly written that there are
different legal standards between criminal and civil legal actions. However,
the presumption of innocence is not one of those differing standards. The different
standard refers to the weight of evidence required to prove guilt. As the penalties
for criminal actions are more severe than in civil cases, the burden of evidence
leading to guilt must be proved "beyond a reasonable doubt." In civil cases,
the burden is merely to portray the preponderance of evidence. In other words,
more than half the available evidence must credibly point toward the guilt of
the accused.
In the Landis case, the principal is more difficult as the test in question
is the only evidence linking the accused to guilt. It is because of this tenuous
link that procedures surrounding testing are so exacting. The burden of accuracy
and proper procedure lie with the accuser, not the accused.
In most legal cases, if there is an error in testing, it calls into question
the accuracy of what can quite possibly be the only evidence linking anyone
accused of doping with an actual offense. If a doping test was conducted in
such a manner as to violate the authenticity, or even to have allowed for a
possibility of contamination, then the burden of proof is not met. Under such
circumstances, the benefit of the resulting doubt must be given to the accused.
The presumption of innocence is a basic right under both the European and American
Constitutions. The legal principal of innocence until proven guilty really doesn't
care what cycling's sponsors or its fans think.

Peter Van Petegem's secret
Yes, as you say, PVP looks comfy in his Quick-Step kit, but what's that dark
blue under his jersey, around the collar?
Wait a minute. What Quick-Step can't afford an extra
jersey for its new signing? Or is Peter a spy?

Lance a no show for Leadville
Go figure, once there was a hint of stiff competitive i.e. Mr. Landis and then
Lance has a "scheduling conflict" with a date which is still eight months out.
Sounds more like a certain Texan did not want to show up and get taught a lesson
in Leadville or he could not find enough people to pace him like he did in the
New York City Marathon.
Too bad, I for one was ready for Mr. Landis to show everyone who is boss. Go
get 'em Floyd!

Lance in Leadville
No thank you Alan. Reminds
me a little of the time I followed Coppi's wheel on a training run on the
Cote D'Azur in the spring of '52, but that's another story…

Lance in Leadville #2
Even if Indurain passed through Leadville that doesn't mean anyone else in
town knew about it except cycling enthusiasts and it doesn't exactly make him
a visitor.
And Lance's popularity is unquestionably greater then Big Mig's, especially
here in the States and to the people of Leadville. Look at what Lance's attendance
in the NYC marathon did. Still your shoulder rubbing stories with big name riders
were pretty cool.

Cyclo-cross reader poll results
As usual, I only write when I have a gripe or a nit-picking correction, for
example concerning the English usage on Cyclingnews. This time it's the results
of the Readers' Poll which give me cause.
Now I'm an American (albeit living in Germany), but the undeservedly high rankings
of North American male and
female cross riders are
just ridiculous. I much enjoy Barbara Howe's contributions to cyclingnews, but
she would surely be the first to demur at being ranked 7th in the world.
Lynne Bessette and Katie Compton ahead of Hanka Kupfernagel? Not in a race
anyway. Trebon ahead of Wellens? No comment.
Can these faux pas be explained by anything but provincialism and its prerequisite,
ignorance? Unfortunately they make the poll irrelevant.

Do the maths
John Goonen states:
"He's not a bad person, and I'm not saying that he even knew testosterone was
administered. However, it was certainly in his bloodstream"
Sorry, but you're wrong. Read the lab results. Floyd's testosterone level was
not, I repeat not high. His epitestosterone level was low. I've seen this fact
stated many times here on cyclingnews and other places, and the lab report itself
is publicly available which clearly shows Floyd's testosterone level was comfortably
in the normal range. Yet we see so many fans and media still claiming the lab
result indicated a high level of testosterone.
From the very first instant that the UCI "leaked" the result, the result has
been that Floyd's T:E ratio was high, not his testosterone level, his T:E ratio.
Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of mathematics knows that there are
two ways for a ratio to be high.
Either the numerator (the first number; in this case T for testosterone) is
large relative to the denominator (the second number; in this case E for epitestosterone),
or the denominator is low relative to the numerator. In Floyd's case, the denominator
was abnormally low. Sorry to get so technical, but these facts have been in
the public domain for nearly six months, yet tons of folks fail to grasp the
reality of the matter. Floyd did not test positive for a high level of testosterone!
We have cyclingnews readers claiming that Floyd's supporters are blind. Well,
even a blind person, with some basic technology, could read the lab report and
be able to determine that the test fails to prove that Floyd had elevated levels
of testosterone. I'm not saying Floyd is innocent of doping. I honestly don't
know if he's innocent or not. I do know that the lab results do not indicate
an excessive level of testosterone in his urine sample. Therefore, it's erroneous
for people to claim otherwise, no matter how well-intentioned.

A fair trial
In response to Peter
Lawrence, none of us heard Tyler's defense "tactics". It was all under wraps
in a system weighted entirely on the side of the labs. Anything you might have
read from the media was sensationalized at best. Why we would expect a cyclist
to understand and explain a failed doping test is beyond me. Oh that's right,
I forgot. Labs never screw up and all cyclists cheat. Organizers always have
the interests of the cyclists at heart. My bad.
No one gets a "fair trial". Hell, they don't even get a trial. Or even a hearing.
It's "You're guilty because we said so", and we'll use the system, and the media
and all means at our disposal to make it stick.

Tubeless road tires
The wonders of new technology with road tubeless tires!
You rate them highly
- they do not compare with either clinchers or tubulars as they can't be run
at the highest pressures. These are non-starters - be brave enough to say so.

Manzano's polygraph test
I'm not sure why people make such a big deal about polygraph tests, in cycling
or otherwise. In the US most if not all jurisdictions do not consider them valid
or admissible evidence in a court of law because they have never been proven
to be sufficiently reliable.

Blind trust in implicated riders
What explanation can one place on the fact, that an ex Tour de France winner,
is almost always the first person to publicly support ex and current teammates
who are implicated in doping allegations or failed test results!
We should all be a little uneasy about this kind of support, from wherever
it comes. It is not too difficult to draw conclusions. Are they based on friendship
or some other relationship?
It is neither normal nor natural to place such blind trust in people, without
there being a reason.

A terrible state of affairs
In general I do not typically write to websites or magazines, however the current
state of affairs in cycling has degraded the foundation of the sport I love
so dearly. I have sacrificed years of my life racing and following racers. I
have seen young guys come up through the sport and do some amazing things. I
have watched heroes come and go. I have seen careers tainted by controversy.
I blame the media. TV, magazine and news websites all feed on this stuff, it
sells. Heck, Phonak has probably had more website hits because of the Landis
affair than they did before it took place. Recent magazines have made declarations
of right and wrong in news articles not in editorial columns; they act like
they are the conscience of the sport. TV commentators speak about accused pros
in the peloton like they are angles.
I remember when Richard Virenque was glorified for his dazzling feats in the
mountains, even after the whole Festina Affair. Now they tout David Millar on
his come back. The only way we are going to move forward with this sport is
if the media stops reporting on the offenders. Do not write another article
on the subject. Do not air a moment of a breakaway with a tainted rider or team.
If a previously convicted rider wins black him out in the picture, do not mention
his name in the article, do not mention his team. That is the type of pressure
directors and managers need to assure a clean sport, if that is really what
we all want.
I think as a sport we need to identify what we really want. So I say media
sell us on the good, not the bad.

Armstrong's credibility - the conspiracy theories
Mr. Boulay asks the breathless question: "I don't get how the LNDD lab that
leaked all [Armstong's] test results to the press in the 1999 Tour, in violation
of UCI regulations and local laws...turn around and become his friend."
The answer is not complex- money, power, favors owed. If the LNDD was weak
and corrupt enough to leak Armstrong's results in the first place, what makes
you think that it would be so impossible for LNDD to make another mistake in
ethical judgment which just so happens to go in LA's favor this time?

Best ride ever
Best darn ride I ever witnessed and I knew it was just waiting to happen! I
had been waiting a few years for Landis to put on a riding exhibition, for I
know his capabilities, and this year, with his maturity, fitness coach Dr Lim,
Ventura, Phonak team, top notch equipment, constant monitoring and testing,
and of course the window of opportunity, after a bonk.
The conditions were perfect, for an all-out bang of a ride, and with the team-car
as a mobile watering hole and his D.S. in constant visual awareness of him,
Floyd did just that! Wow!
No one, and no test, will ever make me believe he cheated. He was either framed
before or after, in which I may never know, but I do know Landis was very capable
of a ride of this, and wasn't a surprise to me at all, and I 'm sure it wasn't
a surprise to his fellow athletes in the peloton either.
Thank you Floyd Landis, Tour de France winner.
