Guilty or not?
Last time I looked you were innocent until proven guilty. Circumstantial evidence
is just that, circumstantial. The burden of proof is rightly placed on the accuser,
so why should you have to prove you are innocent every time someone accuses
you of something? I don't see Lance Armstrong rushing to submit DNA to prove
he was clean all those years. If you can't prove in a court of law, that someone
is guilty, then they are innocent until proven differently.
I think it's a joke that the powers that be in cycling can sanction someone
(Ullrich) so profoundly without actually convicting him. Four months have passed
since the accusations were first made and still no charges have been laid. This,
more than any doping scandal, is turning me away from cycling. Cleaning up the
drug problems in cycling is supposed to level the playing field for clean athletes.
Yet I fail to see how it's fair to accuse someone, and then fail to level charges
against them, even though the evidence is supposedly overwhelming.
If it's unfair to dope, it's also unfair to say someone is guilty before they
have been convicted in a court of law. I don't know what's worse anymore; the
riders that dope or the powers that be, convicting riders that have yet to be
proven guilty of any crime at all.

Innocence and DNA testing
I must be missing the point in Mr. Manyen's letter about a clean cyclist such as Basso purports to be, not wanting to do a DNA test. I would expect anyone who is clean to take a DNA test on the assumption that testing and the lab is reliable and credible - seems like common sense to me. If a cyclist is not clean, it's patently obvious to most of us that by refusing, he/she has something to hide. Why else would a reasonable person do so? I would be very happy if Ullrich and Basso both had DNA tests to prove once and for all they are innocent.
How refreshing to have DNA testing for all sportspeople with the results available well after retirement. It would be even better if these same sportspeople, including pro cyclists, were actually pushing for DNA testing. Then we might see the end of much of the current farce.

At last the UCI is doing something
to address the imbalance of men's and women's events in world track cycling
after the debacle of axing the time trials. I'm personally looking forward to
watching the utter domination of the team sprint by the Meares sisters. Go girls!

Cycling deaths
To the person who wrote that they had not heard of a single cycling death as
a result of unsafe-passing by a motorist: cyclist Brad Gorman of Tucson, AZ,
was killed by a motorist who did exactly what you said never happened, passed
too closely. The police report recorded that the motorist had unsafely passed
the cyclist and was fined $50. The Brad Gorman law passed in Tucson, Arizona
implemented higher fines for motorists who pass unsafely. Check it out. It does
happen.

Cycling deaths
I've been hit nine times in over 30 years on the bike, and four times by drunk-drivers, mostly in New Mexico - the state with the highest DWI (driving while intoxicated) fatality rate in the nation. I've only found one answer that gets the message across loud and clear: press to the max on the criminal proceedings, and after that, sue the daylights out of them in civil court. They'll get the message.

Is Dick Pound credible?
Mr. Roberts strongly implies that Lance Armstrong must have been guilty of having EPO in his system because, "given that he likes to go to court to defend his name, why didn't Lance take more direct action over this in France?" I am not intimately familiar with the implementation of French libel (defamation) laws, but given the fact that France was the only venue where the infamously libelous LA Confidential was published, I suspect it is very difficult for a foreigner to have much hope of success against a French entity.
Anyone who believes in the integrity of the Chatenay-Malabry lab should read the entire Vrijman report on their behaviour in this affair.

A load of Grappe?

There are plenty of drug-use accusations out there that are supported by at
least some physical evidence. Now we have to hear from French trainers who can't
do math?
Grappe speculates that a) Vino has gained 30-40 watts at lactate threshold, and b) that "something's not right there." Darn right something's not right here, Frederic; you apparently don't know how to do long division or how to calculate a ratio. If Vino lost about twelve pounds from last year's mid-season weight and maintained his wattage at LT threshold, this would yield the same result as maintaining his weight and increasing his power by about 35 watts. Go look at pictures of Vino from last season and compare them to this season - he could easily be twelve pounds lighter this year.
Frederic, before your next accusation, do the math. Oh yeah, and come up with
some evidence.

Cheating defined
Why is it there are harsh consequences for doping (artificial means of improving performance) but none for Landis' hip replacement (artificial means of improving performance)? I don't get it.

Cheating defined
"They all do it! I firmly believe that all pro cyclists are cheating." This statement is an oxymoron. Labeling someone a "cheat" implies that he or she did something to gain an 'unfair' advantage. However, if "they all do it," then no one has an unfair advantage. Since no one has an unfair advantage, no one is cheating.

Floyd's turbo bottle
I really cannot say if I truly believe Landis or his accusers. I do not believe
that any guilty person could have the look he had on his face during the first
televised interview.
My big question is, where and how could he have obtained any illegal substances?
If he has been riding so clean all through the Tour and previous races, would
he, or someone close to him, just happen to have a supply? Or is there a 'Tour
pusher-man' hanging around the hotels at night for all those needing something
a little extra? If he does get off, I just hope he can prove he did not take
anything, and that the case is not dismissed on a technicality. If it is dismissed
on a technicality, he will always be under a huge, dark cloud of suspicion.

that T-Mobile, not to mention the UCI and anyone else who wants to clean up
the sport of cycling, simply give up? Yeah, you know what, he's right. It's
just too hard, too much work, too much of a challenge, so just forget about
it. That's the spirit! After all, everyone who's ever accomplished anything
in this sport knows that when you face a challenge that seems insurmountable,
or other people say you'll never be able to do it, you should just give up.
