• Kim Sawyer (Travelgirl) wasn't the only racer to have a tough time with this particluarily nasty off-camber section of the Elite Women's Nationals course.
• Even though she hit the ground Sawyer keeps her focus on the course ahead.
• Ann Knapp (Kona) - who says she didn't prepare as thoroughly for 2005 Nationals as she has for Nationals past - was the only woman to stay close to Katie Compton.
• Katie Compton (Redline) came from deep in the sarting pack and rocketed to the front of the race in only the first half lap. It was a lead she'd never give up on the way to her second consecutive national championship jersey.
• Knapp suffered on the technical and muddy course to hold on for second.
• Maureen Bruno-Roy was the breakout start of 2005 U.S. 'cross. Her bronze medal in the women's race will sit on the mantle next to her gold in the Master's 30-34 race (which she won Saturday).
• Melissa Thomas (Tokyo Joes/GoLite) battled Bruno-Roy for third but bobbled a technical section on the last lap to fall back to fourth.
• Ann Fitzsimmons (Velo Bella) was interviewed by Barbara Howe for her latest diary entry.
• Pauleen Frascone (Independent Fabrications/Kempner).
• Sara Kushman (Gear Works/Spinarts) runs the barriers.
• Sami Fournier (Velo Bella).
• Brigette Stoick (River City Bicycles) put on the race of her life to finish eighth.
• Katie Compton looked breathless and relieved as she crossed the finish line. In her one and only elite-level Women's race of the season, she won the national championship.
• After a moment to catch her breath (and before she had a chance to wipe a warm towell across her face), Compton allowed herself to smile at her victory.

• The Elite men’s race gets underway. On the front row, Mark McCormack, Ryan Trebon, Tim Johnson, Jonathan Page, Todd Wells, Adam Craig, Michael Cody, Matt White, Jeremy Powers, Jonathan Baker, Erik Tonkin, Jonathan Hamblen, Matt Shriver
• Ryan Trebon (Kona) and Todd Wells (GT Hyundai) made the front of the early selection in the Elite men’s U.S. Cyclocross National Championships.
• Although defending three-time national champion Jonathan Page stayed in contact with Trebon for much of the race, he didn’t have enough energy after spending the previous evening at the hospital with severe stomach flu to mount a challenge for the 2005 championship.
• Former USPRO National Champion Mark McCormack ooked strong early in the race.
• Wells, Trebon and Page stuck together until about the fourth of nine total laps when Page fell of and Wells upped the pressure to get a gap he would maintain all the way to the finish.
• Adam Craig - who by all rights should be laying on a beach somewhere getting rested for next year’s MTB season - managed a respectable fourth.
• Jonathan Page was sponsored by National Championships underwriter Liberty Mutual for the weekend and wore Liberty Seguros team kit in the Elite race.
• This is how the race developed - Page chased Trebon who chased Wells. Neither chase would be successful.
• Craig tapped into his MTB skill (riding lines racers had been walking all day) and almost caught Page in the final two laps.
• With the dominant riders well up the course, the rest of the field was left battling for bragging rights.
• Jason Tullous of the Voodoo Cycles/drunkcyclist.com grass-roots team.
• Wells said “I rode as hard as I could,” after the race.
• Trebon, after faltering mid-race found a renewed vigor and mounted a last-lap challenge that saw him claw within five bike lengths of Todd Wells. He just didn’t have enough punch to beat the Coloradan up the finishing straight.
• Jelly Belly’s Jeremy Powers followed Jonathan Page’s footsteps this season; he’s been racing a full program in Europe.
• Wells face demonstrates the condition of the course.

• 2004 U23 National Champion Jesse Anthony who had won six straight national championship races until Saturday, suffered an early mechanical that knocked him off the lead group.

• Troy Wells earned the first Wells brothers national championship in the U23 race. Brother Todd took the Elite race two hours later.
• Carrying his bike or riding it, Wells was just too strong for defending national champion Jesse Anthony.
• Besides Anthony, Brent Bookwalter chased the younger Wells. Bookwalter was the winner of the 9am men’s collegiate race.

• Dale Knapp, surrounded here by the "cyclocross guy" fan club (complete with club mullets), won the Master's 40-44 National Championship. Knapp, husband of 2002 National Cyclocross Champion and Women's Elite favorite Ann Knapp, is a fixture in Seattle-area cyclocross and has been performing well even in Elite Men's races this season.
• Due to nasty, wet and freezing conditions racers wore every bit of clothing they could get their hands on during Friday's warm-up sessions.
