Pearce in fine form

By Rod Morris

The on and off again career of Ulverstone based cyclist Stephen Pearce is currently in a definite "on" mode. Pearce, a former major placegetter in Tasmania's grand slam of Christmas Carnival wheelraces was one of the standout riders in this week's race meeting conducted by the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club. Pearce showed a clean pair of pedals to some of the club's more fancied riders, particularly in the Open Elimination title.

In a quality sprint to match anything witnessed over the Christmas peak period, Pearce outgunned reigning MVDCC champion Gareth Atkins, with former Rosebery Wheel winner Daniel Cutting finishing third.

Ace road rider Nathan Clarke was relegated to ninth after judges deemed him eliminated earlier in the race, but continued to ride in the peloton.

Gareth Atkins had his revenge in other races, the 3000 m handicap and 5000 m scratch, while Pearce again featured in the minor placings.

In J1 racing, Jarrod Harman and Natasha Mapley, along with the promising Kaidan Homan were the stars, while in the younger age groups, Alex Holden (J2) and Brendan Sutton (J3) indicated they are in for solid summers.
