Friday Night Winter Track Racing

Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, June 24, 2005

A healthy field of 70 riders took to the boards for the first round of FNWTR for 2005. It was great to catch up with old friends and also to see so many new faces trying FNWTR for the first time.

During the warm up, world record holder Peter Barnard took to the track with what looked like a motor attached to his bike. With a number of Commissaires present who were sporting international and national accreditations, Barnard was pulled from the track. An investigation of the device revealed a spoke card attached to an exhaust style amplifier. Peter was told that Junior Development starts next week and was kindly asked to remove the offending toy.

The feature race of the night was the Velocraft 1km wheel race for Div 1. I watched the race, I spoke to the riders and I watched the video replay. But I still don't know how Brad Scarfe (Central Coast CC) managed to win this event. Brad scored himself a pair of Wellgo Pedals valued at $129 thanks to Velocraft. Velocraft@ozemail.com.au

With such a healthy number of riders a 5th Division was added, this became Div 4b and included some of our younger riders. Surprisingly this proved to be one of the most exciting grades with the group of 10 riders all very evenly matched on ability, talent and potential. The crowd was treated to a fantastic display of point score riding by the youngsters, with no shortage of competitors willing to include a well timed attack. There was no stand out individual in this grade with 5 races producing 5 different winners.

Div 4a included Olympiad Cass Kell. Cass is the 'Matilda's' (Australian Women's Soccer team) goal keeper who was so impressed with her experiences at the Athens Velodrome, that she has decided to give the sport a go. Many were impressed with her explosive speed and power. The comment 'the girl's got talent' was common place amongst the audience.

Div 3 witnessed the first inclusion of Scott Law into the older divisions of FNWTR. The national U15 200m fly record holder completely dominated his much more experienced compatriots. Scott won all 5 of his races including the Div 3 + Div 2 Combine at the end of the night. Scott is now a forced promotion into Div 2.

Div 2 had the smallest number of riders but had the most number of national champions. It was a welcomed return to see Andrew Grant regain some form after last year saw him struggling in Div 3. Ivan Colig also started the season with his usual 'I am not so fit' then blasted the doors off his competition on the track. Again there was no stand out individual in this grade with 5 races producing 5 different winners.

The term 'Big Boys' reserved for the top division didn't seem so appropriate with the grade dominated by the U19 riders in the group. Division 1 had a very healthy 20 riders who were all keen for some hard racing. This week also saw the welcomed return of 'CNSW Time Blaster'. With a target time of 9min 30, the bunch started well hitting the 10 lap time check 2 seconds down on schedule with at least 15 riders staying in the fast moving bunch. At the 20 lap time check they were bang on target but with only 10 riders remaining which included 3 Central Coast riders. Together with Patrick Bolan they forced the pace leaving only 5 survivors to complete the final 5 laps. The work by the Central Coast riders proved valuable as Michael Mellish sprinted to victory in a time of 9min 23 seconds 47.96km/hr. Notably, Michael came and saw me after the race to split his $50 note into smaller bills.

Next week will be a spectacular night with the Ivan Colig from Mortgage Maker 1.5km wheelrace. This race is a yearly feature combined handicap. The top four place getters from the scratch race qualify to ride the wheelrace for their chance at $250 cash.

In addition to this magnificent race, next week will be the first week of Junior Development hosted by Lionel Cox. FNWTR competitors please note that the track will be closed until 6:45pm to allow the Jnr Development riders space to do their thing. Warm up will start at 6:45pm.
