Olympians lead the way at L.A. Time Trials

By USA Cycling

American athletes with hopes of representing their country at future international competitions competed in the opening day of the Los Angeles Time Trials on Friday.

Of the five events held on Friday, four of them were won by 2004 Olympic Team members. Christian Stahl (Bethany, Conn.) won the men's flying 200m event, clocking a time of 10.852. Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.) posted an 11.922 to capture the women's flying 200m. Olympic bronze medalist Erin Mirabella (Racine, Wis.) rode a promising early season time of 3:49.89 to win the women's 3km time trial. In the standing 250m event, Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo.) rode an 18.924 on his way to the best time.

Curtis Gunn (Tucson, Ariz.) won a closely contested 4km time trial as the only non-Olympian to win on Friday.

The Los Angeles Time Trials is the second opportunity for riders to gain entry into the USA Cycling Talent Pool, a group of athletes from which rosters for major international competitions will be selected.

On Friday, none of the winners met the time standards for automatic qualification into the talent pool, however each winner can still receive discretionary entry. The Talent Pool team will be announced prior to upcoming World Cup to be held in Los Angeles December 10-12.
