Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing #6Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney, July 23, 2004Athens-bound riders roll outBy Paul Craft Three riders who were selected to represent Australia at Athens later this year joined 52 other track enthusiasts for a fun night of competitive racing. The feature race for night was "The Div 1 VELOCRAFT 1km Wheelrace". Shaun Hopkins starting from scratch had to close a 40m gap to the next rider. This proved to be too much and for the first time in a long time Hopkins was not going to feature in the wheelrace. First year U19 Michael Mellish from Central Coast stormed home to overpower the fading Craig Eather. Dual Australian Silver medalist Phil Stokes was the best of the rest claiming third place. Velocraft has been a long time supporter of FNWTR and you can see what they have for sale on http://stores.ebay.com.au/Velocraft FNWTR has offered the Australian Paralympics Tandem teams an opportunity to hone their match sprinting skills. David Short, Janelle Lindsey and Lindy Hou who are all on the road to Athens showed why they are the best in the world with an impressive display of skill and speed over a three race series. The unusual Win'n'Out races were raced with much vigor. The lure of being able to win the race and pull out after 5 laps saw the sprinters rubbing their hands with glee. Spare a thought for the poor souls who went for the win and failed and in the process, burning too much energy to be able to contest the minor placing sprints. Round 4's Mystery lapper had everyone guessing. The tactic of course was to stay near the front in anticipation of the bell. In the Div 1 race Anthony Bennett took this ideology to the extreme. The talented Lidcombe rider attacked the bunch only 5 laps into the race hoping the bell would ring soon. The tactic almost worked with Anthony holding a 50m lead for the bell on lap 13. Shaun Hopkins still smarting from the wheelrace made no mistakes crossing the gap to Bennett with ease to win the race. Next weeks racing will feature the always spectacular monthly Madison . Well worth a visit to ride or witness this amazing team race.
