Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing #3Dunc Gray Velodrome, June 13, 2003By Paul Craft Although it was Friday the 13th, with a full moon, it was certainly not an unlucky night for the strong field, who enjoyed a devilishly wicked evening of hot racing. The night kicked off with the first junior development session, hosted by former world champion Lionel Cox. When the big kids came out to play there was no place for soft-pedaling and all races were run at a fast pace. The highlight of the night was the 1km Div 1 wheel race. BJ (Brett Johnston) starting off 80m, went it alone with 2 laps remaining. It would have been the winning move if the race was 997m. However, he didn't count on those last 3 metres nor did he envisage two back markers, Alex Sommers and David Brownie, giving perfect lead outs to Shaun Hopkins who launched himself at the final 60m to close with only 1 lap remaining. Shaun took the victory and the lead in the Div 1 point-score. Grant Patrick has spent his last days in Div 2 after clean sweeping the division in first place. The under 17 rider appeared to be pushing a bigger gear on the night and showed that he was ready to mix it with the ‘big boyz’. Patrick Bolan, in Div 2B, will also find himself up a grade next week after demonstrating perfect skills and finding his way first to the line in each of his events. In Div 3, Geoff Worthington won the Win’N’Out race but not before he nearly took out the whole field immediately after the first sprint. The near miss helped Big Trevor Wait, to place a very respectable second. Canberra’s Lauren Carroll spent the weekend in Sydney visiting Nanna and winning Track races. However, Wendy Walker and Skye Armstrong, both of whom managed to take a victory away from Lauren on two separate occasions, fiercely challenged her in each race. In the FNWTR teams challenge both Waratah Vets and Bicisport have stamped an impression and taken a commanding lead. However, with only two point-scoring rounds completed thus far, any team could shoot up to take overall honours by the end of the season. After the racing had ended, riders had the opportunity to relive the action of the night at the Handle Bar Tavern. Many thanks to Chris who spent the night getting dizzy whilst videoing the action that was later replayed on the huge screen. We got to watch BJ wince in pain as he relived those final 3m of the wheel race. Additional thanks to Phillip who volunteered his help and Howard Grimshaw, our ever-vigilant commissar for the night. Can't wait till next week.
