Results and Reports for the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Asheville Training Series #9Asheville, August 6, 2002Thank Goodness for Women and ChildrenReport by Chris Kamm Another beautiful night of racing filled the oval at the French Broad River Park. Since event #9 was sandwiched between last weekends' French Broad Cycling Classic and a five race criterium series that kicks off in the Piedmont tomorrow night, small fields were expected on the night. Thankfully, the women produced a record field for their event and then joined the B Race to swell those ranks as well. The night started with a dozen riders contesting the final youth race of the season. And when the women lined up a special note was made of how they have responded to a chance at their own event. Allison Hardy continued her win streak in the 25-lap points race, although it took a tiebreaker to separate Jennifer Petosa who was equal on sprint points. The third spot went to Annette Kamm who is fresh off RAGBRAI, the party ride across Iowa: check out www.ragbrai.com. Thomas Burns notched his third win of the series against the B grade racers in their 15-kilometer points race. He is now three for three and poised to make off with the season prize if he returns for the remaining three nights. In second place this night was Mark Scholtz, followed by David Lovett who used a late flyer to score in the penultimate sprint as well as the double points finale. The B race season title is still anyone's to win. Five riders are within 9 points. The Masters' 20-kilometer points race produced a most memorable picture. Darby Harris took the night off and Joe Coddington was riding active recovery rather than going all out. Consequently the order of the race was turned on its ear and everybody's favorite eccentric, Mr. Michael Davidson, stole away to a big lead before halfway and survived to the end with a big pile of points, scooped up while the main field bickered about how to react. T-Bone Taylor strengthened his overall points total with a second place tally, and Todd Tamplin finished third. After the race I caught up with Mr. D and asked if he had not just told me that he planned to quit the sport, based on dwindling performance. Well, the smile on his face put that to rest. Brian Pierce, well no one can stop him if he enters the Fixed Gear events. He won again in a walk. We are planning a trip to Dick Lane Velodrome in Atlanta next month, and he is on the passenger list. Michael Koerschner had another big night to grab second in Pierce's wake, and is now closing in on second overall for the year. Meanwhile, Jim McMillan reaped the reward of perseverance by graduating to third on the night. As a developmental program, it is good to see the riders embracing the pure fun of fixed gear racing. The A grade boys lived up to expectation and produced a tiny field. Rather than send them off for 60 laps, we took the opportunity to run some fun events, namely a miss and out and a win and out. Joe Coddington and Jacob McGahey traded wins and the final order left Coddington on the top of the heap. Chris Ernst tallied third followed by Dan Miller and Clark Hollins.
