Baldwin battles ripping wind Mt. Hood time trail

Chris Baldwin battled strong gusts in Oregon's Hood River Gorge Friday to win Mt. Hood's stage two time trial, 29.8 kilometres (18.5mi) in 42 minutes and 44 seconds. The American of team OUCH moved from third to second overall, 15 seconds behind team Bissell's Paul Mach.
"It was very gusty – they don't call it the wind-surfing capital of the country because it's calm. The biggest thing is not letting that stuff get in your head," said Baldwin. "It's a very long, hard time trial and I've blown myself every other year here before the finish so I just really wanted to stay within myself."
Baldwin finished ahead of Mach by three seconds.
"I'm really impressed that Paul Mach was just a matter of seconds behind me – he's obviously a very talented up and coming rider," said Baldwin.
OUCH's John Chodroff finished third at 35 seconds down. The ride him from 29th to fifth in the general classification.

Mach's Bissell teammate Morgan Schmitt finished 1:17 back and moved from second to third overall. With both Bissell and OUCH claiming two men in the top five, tomorrow's 148-kilometre (92-mile) Wy'East Road Race will be critical.
"Tomorrow is going to be a showdown," Baldwin told Cyclingnews. "I think we're in a nice position not to have to do too much.
"The biggest thing we have going for us right now is that Mach has shown how strong he is."
Pitel edges Goldstein for win and leader's jersey

Edwige Pitel made her presence known in USA Friday with her win in the 29.8 kilometres (18.5mi) time trial in Oregon's Hood River Gorge. The Frenchwoman moved from fourth to first overall.
The former national champion (time trial, road and track) tore up the course to beat last year's winner and overall favourite Leah Goldstein (VAC) by five seconds. Pitel covered the course in 50 minutes and five seconds.
Pitel won the opening day's prologue time trail. Friday's stage win put her back in the leader's jersey with a two-second lead over Goldstein.
"It was tough," Pitel told Cyclingnews. "You had the headwind and you got the feeling that you were not riding very fast. I was able to stay in my aero bars, but I was holding on very tight because my front wheel was taking a lot of wind."
The wind also affected Goldstein.
"Today was hard – I was not in the bars a lot today because I am not a huge daredevil – people were moving all over the place and I just couldn't get into a rhythm," said Goldstein.
Melissa McWhirter (Veloforma) relinquished the leader's yellow leader jersey she held overnight after a fourth place position, 2:18 back from Pitel.
"I went as hard as I could – that's all you can do."
The performance dropped her to third overall, over two minutes behind Pitel and Goldstein.
Patricia Bailey (Wines of Washington) was the third fastest of the day at 1:24 back.
Pitel and Goldstein face a close battle with only two second's separation heading into the Wy'East road race tomorrow. The stage contains over 3000 metres (10,000 feet) of elevation gain over 148 kilometres (92 miles).
Goldstein will have help from teammate Robin Farina, who has already shown her strength when the road turns uphill.
"Tomorrow's going to be a big day," said Goldstein.
