Intermountain Color's Craig McCartney won the 5th annual Rocky Mountain Omnium in the Colorado Foothills over Memorial Day weekend. McCartney was the most consistent racer, placing 2nd in the beautiful Evergreen Time Trial behind Jeff Hartmann (Pro Peloton), winning Sunday's Circuit Race atop S. Table Mountain, and finishing 4th at the (inaugural) Historic Downtown Golden Criterium (AST's Kevin Nicol won the crit). Josh Barnett (GS Ciao) finished second overall, and Hartman wound up 3rd despite an 11th place at the criterium. Martha Meyer (Vitamin Cottage) won the women's overall with Jon Heideman (RMCEF) taking the 35+ overall, and Cameron Payne winning the juniors race. Also a big part of the event, was the handcycle race which featured top disabled athletes from all over the country. The criterium would double as the National Handcycle Crit. Championships, and the entire Paralympic Handcycle team was on hand to race. World Time Trial Champion (and local), Monica Bascio (Invacare / Top End) easily won all 3 women's event and her 13th national title, while Paralympic medal hopeful, Alejandro Albor (U.S. Paralympics) did the same in the men's race and captured his first-ever national title. Jim Harlan (U.S. Paralympics) took home the honors in the HCA class and Matthew Updike (Invacare / Top End) won the HCB men's race. The race proved to be a great venue for a "fully-integrated" event featuring able-bodied and disabled athletes at the same venue, and the brand new time trial and criterium courses received rave reviews from all the athletes at the event, which also raised more-than $5,000 for Colorado disabled sports charity, Adaptive Adventures.
