   Hi speed cornering
   An early break
    goes clear. The main bunch
were vigilant in chasing down breaks during the early stages of the race.
   Naturally,
one of the best seats in the house is dedicated With the locals
keen to show off in front of a home crowd, the men's race got underway at
a cracking pace and never let up. After eight
minutes, the tone of the race was set, with a lead group of four opening
up a 10 second lead from a small chase group including Matt White, with the
peloton just a couple more seconds behind. With the first
four places all but accounted for, a number of small breaks opened up
over the final 10 minutes, with Queenslander Allan Davis was the first to
    go. It wasn't
Robbie McEwen's day today, but that didn't stop the locals cheering him
    on. The lead group
    of four riders. Bundaberg
rider Allan Davis lurks in the background, waiting to pounce. Baden Cooke
leads Matt White in the closing moments of the race. Once the lead
break lapped the field, the peloton knew they were fighting for fifth.
   Things stayed
pretty tight until the bell lap. As the finish
line approached for the main bunch, local rider Allan Davis put the hammer
down to take fifth place. Matt Wilson
rides in the peloton, followed by Cameron Hughes. Go Alby!
Allan Davis takes a flyer. With speed
and strength being the order of the day, there were plenty of casualties.
   The lapped
riders were given the three laps to go call to allow the lead group to
    contest the race victory. Spectators
(and the cameras) get ready for a photo finish. Bradley McGee

Robbie McEwen. Images by James Worrell Images by Michael Gall Irish Cyclocross Championships Images by Shane Stokes
   The riders
nervously await the start. The pack
sprints away, the tussle for places paramount in the minds of the riders.
   Twelve-time
Irish champion Robin Seymour wasted little time in going clear. Apollo's
Andy Lahye, All Ireland cross league winner Roger Aiken and XMTB junior
Lewis Ferguson lead the chase. Team WORC's
Keith Meghen had finished second to Aiken in the first round of the Irish
League. This was his first race back after illness. Robin Seymour
draws further ahead as the race progresses. As expected,
Roger Aiken was his Seymour's challenger. Lewis Ferguson
is just 18, but showed great promise with today's ride. Robin Seymour
passes the old ruins on the Kilruddery Estate property. Robert Lamont's
efforts would help net the XMTB club the team prize. Andrew McAllister
(ECV Racing) sure looks the part. Stephen O'Sullivan
is well known as a roadie, having won a stage in the 2000 FBD Milk Ras. He's
been riding pretty well off-road too, of late. Today's course
was a mixture of fast stretches... ... and some
    more technical sections. Kilcullen
CC's Liam Walker is a regular face at races during the season, as an official
of the Leinster Cycling Federation and Cycling Ireland. Don Travers
took silver in 2002 but found a tough opponent today in Lewis Ferguson in
his quest for bronze. XMTB's Lewis
Ferguson tussled with Travers throughout the second half of the race.
   Lewis Ferguson
was the fresher and the more aggressive of the two. Lewis Ferguson
surged clear of Travers in the final 400 metres, opening up a gap and securing
    bronze. A weary Don
Travers rolls home for fourth on the day. Robin Seymour
said the race was hard. He should have known what to expect - after all, he
    designed the course! Lewis Ferguson
rode well - we should hear more of him in the future. So too Roger
Aiken, four years his senior but another with some good performances ahead.
   Glen Kinning
and Roger Aiken catch up on the latest news after the finish. The medalists
    - Roger Aiken (silver), Robin Seymour (gold) and bronze medallist, Lewis Ferguson.
   Lewis Ferguson,
Glen Kinning and Robert Lamont were best team on the day, taking third, sixth
and seventh. Sydney Cup on Wheels Images by John Veage
   Despite
a brilliant effort by defending champion Rochelle Gilmore to move to the
front of the field from her scratch mark, she was unable to hold off a fast-finishing
Leslie Aisbett who collected the Women's Sydney Cup on Wheels. Sydney
rider Graeme Brown became the first person ever to win the Men's Sydney
Cup on Wheels three times at Dunc Gray Velodrome. Yeah baby!
