Tasmania's Rider of the Year unveiled

By Rod Morris in Latrobe

The race to find the second annual winner of Cycling Tasmania's Rider of the Year award is now clear after an exciting and explosive day of racing at the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club's Carnival at the Latrobe ground.

Heading into the penultimate carnival with a 2-point lead, Burnie based Michael Johnson did his chances of overall victory no harm when he won the Forestry Tasmania MVDCC Wheelrace and then picked up further points in the accident-delayed Lightning Hanidcap.

His nearest challenger - Ryan Johnson (no relation to Michael) from Launceston stayed in touch with his namesake by winning the 1000m Lightning Handicap and then scoring a vital point in the A Grade Scratch.

The action packed day of drama unfolded in the Lightning Handicap when a three-rider crash forced carnival organisers to re-run the event later in the day.

Comeback rider Dane Leedham appeared to get the "speed wobbles" forcing Adam Hartley to tumble, which in turn brought down David Oliver and then scratchman Nathan Clarke - who after suffering mild concussion could take no further part in the day's events.

The Wheelrace was a fast and furious affair in which the backmarkers took no real part in. Michael Johnson rode a determined race to claim another victory for the summer ahead of Nathan Hingston, while the affable Trent "Moon' Deacon took third.

Michael Johnson backed up in the Lightning Handicap to finish third behind Ryan Johnson and another comeback rider, Matthew Atkins, who impressed in the A Grade Scratch, to score second behind his younger brother Gareth.

Junior wheelrace winners included John Rayner (J1), Hugh Williams (J2) and Patricia Barnes (J3) while the performance of 16-year-old Natasha Mapley of Devonport deserved special mention with three wins and a second from just four riders.

In running events, Burnie's Tim Potter scored a solid double in the 100m and 400m handicaps, while women's winners in the same distance events were Lisa Palmer and Danielle Taylor. The Open 1600 m Handicap saw Tiah Simmons off 280 m hold off backmarker Robbie Young in a thrilling finish.
