It's hard for most cyclists to stay in form for any great length of time, but Hobart's Jason Johnson is belying that trend.
A former nationally ranked weightlifter, Johnson's has been in tremendous touch for most of the Tasmanian summer and yesterday (Sunday, Jan. 13) added the Michael Burr Real Estate 2000m Wheelrace to his list of credits.
Conducted by the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club, yesterday's carnival at Latrobe attracted more than 140 competitors and will almost certainly become a permanent fixture on the Tasmanian carnivals calendar.
Johnson won both the Oval Wheelrace and Lightning Handicap at the Devonport carnival in early December and backed that up with victory in another lightning handicap at George Town a week later.
Today Johnson formed part of a solid group of riders off the 140m mark.
So polished was the performance of Johnson, Ron Crawford (140m) and Jarrod Burr (140m), they filled the first three placings.
Gareth Atkins was the lone scratchman at the carnival and although he qualified for the final, he was left stranded high and dry and he was facing a solo chase of 90m to his nearest opponent - Karl Menzies, who bravely took fourth spot.
Johnson also took the A Grade Scratch while honours were shared evenly at the carnival with Hobart sprinter Adrian Morrisby winning the 1000m Handicap, Dane Leedham, the B Grade Scratch and Colin Barnes, the C Grade Scratch.
Four Tasmanian Scratch Championships were also held at the carnival with Matthew Goss (Boy's Under 17), Samantha Masters (Girl's Under 17), Alex Holden (Boy's Under 15) and Angela Klyne (Girl's Under 15) all gaining success.
