Regional Cycling Stars Visit French Broad River Park

In advance of this Friday's Ingles Strive Not 2 Drive Criterium, to be held downtown in conjunction with Downtown After 5, the race series at the French Broad River Park attracted some heavy hitters from out of town. Andy Crater of Greensboro won the top level A race with apparent ease. Joining him on the podium were Randy Parker of Raleigh and Joey Coddington of Asheville. In the Masters race, Darby Harris of Cullowee returned to the top step of the podium after finishing off Parker and Treavis Taylor of Asheville in a close affair.

The B race was even closer and required a tie breaker after 2 time winner Brian Pierce of Fletcher and Rob Schoen of Asheville ended equal on points. Pierce had to give up the top step this week, and those two were joined by Blake Shelton to complete the top three places. Mr. Pierce got his revenge in the Fixed Gear Omnium, winning two of the three events which put him at the top of the overall tabulation. Again it was razor close as only two points separated the top three riders. Todd Tamplin and Bruce Berry were on the short end of the struggle and finished second and third.

Tuesday night was also the first night that kids races were on the program. As such, James Hoffman established the course record for 500 meters (1 lap) en route to his win in the 8 and under race. In the 3 lap race for 13 and under, Melissa Garrett and Sydney Hedberg proved once again that girls can ride bikes as fast as boys.

As is the custom, the French Broad River Park was full to capacity on a brisk evening. Until May 28...
