Update

Report courtesy Colorado Velodrome Association

With the season rolling forward the CVA thought we would take a minute to update you on the Rider of the Year competition across all categories.

Pro 1-2

As expected, this is one of the tightest competitions going. Marcus Black (Cody Racing) held the lead for most of the month but when the sprinting got hot, 2001 Rider of the Year, Che Frey (Hammer Racing) was able to edge him out for the lead. A ways back, in third is the 2002 Masters A Rider of the Year Mark Guerin. Steve Prokopiw (Hammer Racing) and Mike Creed (Prime Alliance) got a late start but are moving up through the standings pretty quickly.

In the Sprint Competition , Che Frey continues to distance himself from the field of talented riders with double the second place points of Mark Guerin.

Marcus Black is in firm command of the Endurance Omnium as he continues to lap the field in the points races. Mike Creed (Prime Alliance) and Dave McIntosh (Eastside Wheelmen) are battling it out for second in this race.

Women's Open

The 2000 Women's rider of the year, Missy Thompson is back to take control of the track racing scene. Now riding in the Magenta of T-Mobile, this very talented young rider has a firm command of the Season Points competition. Missy has managed to earn double the points of her nearest challenger Renee Eastman (Vitamin Cottage/Morgul Bismark). Making a fast run at the top, Joanne Kiesanowski (DietRite) is definitely on the move.

Known as a track sprinter, it is not surprising Missy leads the Sprint Competition over Kerry Soraci (DietRite) and Jenner Yaeso (PedalHome. com/Rogue Wave). The surprise comes in the Endurance category where she lead Renee Eastman. All these road mile she is doing with her T-Mobile Teammates must be paying off!

Category 3-4

In the Category 3-4 race it is Carl "The Weasel" Boucher (Cody Racing) that seems to be keeping the racing exciting and bringing home the points! Carl has taken an early lead as the field starts to chase. Track newbie, Jeremy Hackney as come out of nowhere to move into second place closely followed by Bruce Hitchcock (Vitamin Cottage/Morgul Bismark) and Mike Aggson (Eastside Wheelmen). This looks like a series that will come down to the line!

Masters A

The Tuesday night racing is every bit as exciting as Friday! In the Masters A, 2001 Rider of the Year Mark Guerin (Cody Racing) is back to defend his title. He holds a 4 point lead over Eastside Wheelmen's Mark Guerin. A surprise visit from Jame Carney (Prime Alliance) is holding Kevin Knapp out of the third place, but this Hammer Racing rider is on a mission this year, he will be moving up, I am sure! Terry Lott (Eastside Wheelmen) rounds out the top five.

* Masters B rider

Masters B

The battle between the local clubs is developing in the Masters B field. Pikes Peak Velo is outnumbered by the Eastside Wheelmen but they are playing their cards right and have 2 riders in the top three. Mike Aggson (Eastside Wheelmen) has a good lead over Robert Roth (Pikes Peak Velo) and John Marshall (Pikes Peak Velo) but these two riders are coming on strong. David Williams (Eastside Wheelmen) is holding onto fourth with Scott Hendricks making a triumphant return to track racing moving quickly into 5th place.

Category 4-5

This has been the usual crop of track beginners. From complete newbies to bike racing to experienced roadies, we have seen them all! Kip Biese of the Cody Racing Team showed his speed for several weeks earning a large lead before moving on to greener pastures. Eric "Rattlecan" Barr has a tentative second place of the sprinting duo of Jeffrey Jimeson and Geof Suits (Eastside Wheelmen). Nathan Dills, a category 1 roadie showed up one night and earned enough points to hold onto 5th place in this category. The racing has been fast and smooth. A good group of trackies here!

1 Kip Biese 55
2 Eric Baar 28

Women's Development

This has been an exciting category for the CVA! Last year's "Category 4 Women's Challenge" sparked tons of interest in track racing! The field have been filling up on a weekly basis! With riders trying out racing for the first time or just getting used to the track, the racing has been nothing but exciting! Jenner Yaeso (PedalHome. com/RogueWave) and Amy Zirneklis (Cody Racing) brought their road and mountain bike experience to the track and found the love! They are now both full fledge trackies! Amy Z has moved on to winning State Championships, Jenner is battling it out in the Masters B category. Jenner still leads this category with Amy in second. The Eastside Wheelmen Women's Team is racing hard to change that. Meggan "I got a new bike" Flaherty (Eastside Wheelmen) has her first win under her belt and likes the taste of victory. Emily Huang looks to be her closest competitor. She is looking for her first win, I don't think it will be long! Jodi Walzer (Eastside Wheelmen) has moved into fifth place!

Team Competition

So how does this all shake out for the team award? As expected, it is the big three battling it out for the third year in a row. Hammer Racing is eager to get to Masters Districts to get some of their special points action going! They are currently sitting in third behind the 2000 Team of the Year, Eastside Wheelmen. Sitting on top again is the 2002 Team of the Year, Cody Racing. This looks like a battle that will come down to the last night of the season!
