American Team Cycling Zooms into Lehigh Valley Velodrome

Report courtesy Gwen Hoover

The Lehigh Valley Velodrome came alive on Friday, June 28, when East Penn Publishing presented the American Team Cycling Championships. The night was filled with anticipation, excitement and even some close calls.

The ATC Championships began with the 10-Minute Attack. The South American Sting Team, led by the Rider of the Week, Sebastian Alexandre, managed to sail into first place. The second ATC event, the Team Miss-and-Out, started off smoothly but gave the crowd a shock when Juan Jose Haedo, a South American Sting Team member, crashed, but fortunately left the field. Though a team member went down, the South American Sting Team celebrated another first place victory.

The ATC Championship came to a close with the 10 Minute Attack Finale, and the Pennsylvania Power Team were crowned the 2002 ATC Champions, awarding the honor to Jon Frederick, Mike Beers, Trevor Matulys and Erik Bonser. The "Attack" is named for its aggressive style: the race is comprised of 3 laps sprints, or "Attacks", where the racing is fierce; at the end of each of these 3-lap bursts, the top 2 riders across the finish line earn points for their teams. After the Attack a motorcycle comes onto the track to bring the field back together; the motor is on the track for 1 1/2 - 2 laps, reaching speeds of 35 m.p.h. The race gets very physical here, when riders jockey for the best position for the next sprint; the motor comes off the track at the and the Attack begins again with an all out sprint to the finish line.

The night was not just for the boys, though. Women's racing consisted of the 15-Lap Final, the Miss-and-Out, and finally the 20 Lap Points Race. The women refused to let the men outshine them, so they gave their all in the Points Race, as this event was an opportunity to earn Rider of the Year points. Fiona Carswell snagged first place, leaving Ashley Kimmet to settle for second and Cindy Lakatosh to take third.
