Weather cools off but not the racing!

CVA/Chipotle Race Season kicks off for the Masters and Beginners!

By Scott Patton

With rain threatening all day long, the CVA was not sure if they were going to get the first night of the CVA Chipotle Masters and Beginners Racing started! The turnouts were light in both fans and racers but that didn't stop people from racing hard!

In the Master A category, the track was on fire. Last years Master A Rider of the Year, Mark Guerin was back to defend his title. In the first event, a 8 lap scratch, the race was a smooth and efficient paceline with LC2 National Champion Dory Selinger and Pikes Peak Velo's Mark McCafferty sharing the work with Mr. Guerin. When the sprint wound up, Mark Guerin finished off the race the way he ended last year, WINNING!

In the Snowball, Mark McCafferty was looking for redemption. He took off early and got a 3 point lead on his competitors. Mark Guerin quickly took control of the race and wound it up for a 52 point finish!

With the fields being small, the A's and the B's were combined for the 10 mile. The field set out for a record but didn't hve the horse power. 5 riders set themselves out in front of the field. Mark Guerin, Mark McCafferty, Dory Selinger, Mike Aggson (Eastside Wheelmen) and John Marshall (Pikes Peak Velo). They worked like a well together until the final sprint when it was Dory Selinger taking home the prize. Mark Guerin came in for Second in the A Category. Mike Aggson narrowly edged out John Marshall for the B Category win.

In other Masters B action, the racing started off with a fast and furious 10 lap scratch. There were attacks throughout the event, but when it came down to crossing the line first, Mike Aggson started off his 2002 season with a win.

The Masters B Point-A-Lap showed people that the Eastside Wheelmen were back to win their team award back. They lined up with a plan, straight from their director. An early attack by Winston Schultz catapulted John Marshall off the front for the early point. Not wanting to work to hard early, John sat up and Winston followed suit. At this point, Eastside's Doug Novy attacked and went solo for the next 7 laps. As he was about to be caught, Mike Aggson attacked to finish off the night! Winston followed Mike in for the final sprint boosting him to third overall!

The Developmental Men's racing was fast. With the University of Colorado rider, Nathan Dills in town to try and get ready for collegiate natz, he wanted to show he was ready for and upgrade.

In the 10 lap scratch, Nathan let the field sort things out for a while before soloing to victory. Cody Racing's Kip Biese was in a close second with Eric "RattleCan" Baar rounding out the top 3.

In the Snowball, the riders didn't want to let Nathan run away with the race. Gary Brewington (Eastside Wheelmen) made an early attack to pick up the single digit. Kip Biese followed him with another attack and scored two. From there, it was the Nathan show all over again. Nathan went at it alone for a total of 49 points.

In the 5 mile, Nathan earned the Chipotle Rider of the Night award narrowly edging out last years track record by just .06 of a second! For his efforts, Nathan received a Chipotle Burrito, Hat and T-Shirt.

The Women's Development Racing was exciting as well. Amy Zirneklis (Cody Racing) was pulling double duty, racing with the men and the women.

Amy has a little more experience than her competitors who are all "graduates' of the CVA Category 4 Women's Challenge! In the first race, a 3 lap Scratch, Amy was able to take the lead from the gun, the other girls couldn't quite catch her. Jodi Walzer of the Eastside Wheelmen tried hard, but had to settle for second.

In the second race a 10 lap point-a-lap, Amy was a little more tired from placing high in the men's races! In this race, Tracy Squires earned some early points but was not able to hold off Amy in the finish. Carrie Richards (Eastside Wheelmen) was extremely excited to have moved into third place by the end of the race! She still hasn't stopped smiling!
